I have never seen this -I would only do it if specifically asked to do so. It is kind of out of the box, but I guess their point is to see how you can present information - especially something that you may not have as much experience with.
My previous job did 10-15 minute presentations on any topic of your choice, preferably non medical.
It was a better way to see their presentation skills and get to know them a little better. Plus it was a great ice breaker.
