How much of a requirement is non-medically related community service to get in to medical school? Is it pretty much expected (like shadowing, volunteering in a clinical setting) or is it just something very nice to have (like research)?

I suppose, technically, it's not "required." However, I believe that having non-medically related community service demonstrates a general compassion for serving others.

It's great to have, but only if you really enjoy it. I did a lot of work with children for personal reasons, and because I was passionate about it I was able to talk about it well at my interview. If you don't have any personal interests in community service, then I wouldn't recommend just "going through the motions."
