I know someone that wants to major in a liberal arts degree. Can he get into a med school with an above 3.5 gpa since the major isnt difficult and just have a science gpa of 3.0 or above. Hes an URM if that helps him.

Yeah, but hopefully his degree is really cool and differentiating. A lot of liberal art majors are psych or sociology, which is fine, he just needs to make himself interesting.

Nonscience majors are at an advantage in some respects, but below average required courses or MCAT can not be offset just by being more interesting.

How would you feel about a social sciences major with a medicore sGPA but a solid (not amazing, but solid) MCAT score?

He would have a good chance at the schools where his stats were at or above the mean (especially if his essays captured the imagination of the screeners.)

Could you elaborate on those advantages? I'm a non-science major and I'm interested in your perspective.

OP, a 3.0 science GPA is too low... People in here says that a GPA greater than 3.5 is competitive. Also, I remember someone here said that when applicant is non-science major adcoms look at pre-reqs' grade more closely.

i hear what your saying. The major is Pol Sci. It is an easy major im sure he can get a 3.5 but the science gpa is what im worried about. Hes a URM can he just got to an HBCU i heard they accept mcat scores of 24 and a gpa of 3.2

The first goal of the applicant is to get past the screeners. After reading a few thousand applications from human bio majors, the viewpoint of someone a little different might catch their attention. You'd have to be a lot more interesting, though, if your gpa and especially MCAT are not close to the mean for that school.

Awesome, thanks. My sGPA is near the median sGPA of the schools to which I am applying, +/- 0.05. My MCAT score is two to four points above the median MCAT of the schools to which I am applying.

haha yeah thats something new for ya

His sGPA should be at least a 3.4, with a 3.5+ to be in the competitive range.

Even as a urm he still needs a 3.4 sgpa? ok ill let him know

what would you say the percentage is for non science majors in med school compared to science majors, some say 50/50 i say 80/20 sci majors beung the majority.
