I am getting ready to start a pre med journey through my undergrad hopefully ASAP (covid reasons). I have read a lot of places that science majors can sometimes work against you because of how competitive it is. I would love to major in Economics or Psychology / Sociology. I think Psych and Socio would translate directly to medicine in some way but would Econ make things harder in that regard? Thanks for everything I am very new to all of this.

You can major in whatever you like, as long as you take all the premed requirements.

This^^^^^^. Many premeds just don't believe it, but schools really, really, really don't care what you major in. In fact, they like the diversity that majors like econ bring.

Since medicine is science, science majors tend to have an easier time with the material. In addition, what you heard about premed science majors being more competitive is true, because some science classes can be difficult, and many premeds find themselves weeded out by them in some schools. The same can happen to you, since there are still science prereqs you have to take, AMCAS calculates a separate science GPA for everyone, and you still have to do well on the MCAT.

Assuming you have a proficiency in relevant sciences (bio, chem, physics, etc.) and do well in the prereqs, you will be absolutely fine. Med schools care about GPA, so the best advice is to major in something you enjoy and will do well in. Good luck!!
