hey! I keep reading all about the research people do during their med school years. I’m a pretty advocacy/activism focused applicant and I’m curious to hear about how people have navigated finding research opportunities more heavily focused on public health/community medicine.

any and every bit of commentary is totally welcomed and appreciated!!!

at least at my school, there are tons of opportunities in those areas. If your med school has an affiliated public health program, there will likely be lots of people doing interesting work that you can reach out to. If there's a particular area of activism you're involved in, there may also be opportunities to publish in that arena as well - it'll look a bit different than chart reviews and case studies a lot of your classmates might be doing, but you might find it fulfilling.

Happy to talk more about my experience if you're interested - I have a couple publications in the policy/ethics/regulatory arena, and am currently working on a couple projects more in line with public health/advocacy. I really enjoy this kind of work and med school has been a great place for it.

I did a research project in documentary filmmaking, complete with poster presentation. I don’t think adcoms took it as serious research at all. I had no experience with the scientific research process, which is what admissions is interested in.
