TL;DR at bottom of post
This cycle I applied to 16 schools. As of March 30th, 2015, I have been rejected by 8, interviewed at 4, and have yet to hear (assumed rejection) from 4 others.
The results of my interviews:
LECOM: waitlist
UTHSC (Memphis): waitlist
Tufts: waitlist
NYU: awaiting notice, interviewed 3/27/15
Stats (if relevant):
GPA: 3.11
SciGpa: 3.3
DAT: 20AA/25RC/22 Orgo/ 19 Sci Avg (low sections: 17 PAT & 16 QR)
Academic Summary: Accounting undergrad with 1.5 yrs work experience, followed by 1.5 years of post-bacc science courses. Plenty of extra-curriculars/shadowing on app. Relatively low volunteering hours. Obvious upward trend with post-bacc science class grades.
Question: Taking into account the fact that it is relatively late in the cycle, I have recently been planning for a situation in which I am not accepted into a dental school. My most likely path if I need to re-apply, will involve me working full time in accounting throughout the 2015 application process until I (hopefully) enter dental school for the fall of 2016.
I know that a few of the schools (at least Tufts and NYU) have the potential to select a bunch of people from their waitlists, but I don't want to wait on an acceptance until June without any plan.
I do not believe that I will take additional science courses over the next year. This decision is largely a financial one, and I wanted some feedback; does the SDN community think/know how schools during the next cycle may view my decision to only work and not take additional courses?
Personally, I think one disadvantage my application for fall 2015 had was an "application complete" date of 9/10/14, which in my opinion is relatively late. I had all of my application materials submitted to AADSAS, however one of my references did not submit their letter of recommendation until early September of 2014.
If not taking courses, I would likely volunteer/continue to shadow to indicate my continued passion/interest for dental school. I have considered re-taking the DAT, but seeing as that I only have 2 "low" sections, I'm not sure I want to invest the time and money (on another prep course) to boost my PAT and QR.
Any advice/input is greatly appreciated.
TL;DR - I'm a non-trad planning my next year if I need to re-apply, not going to take more classes, bad move?
