I know this was said in the old non-trad thread but this happened to me.

Someone asked my age in one of my classes this semester.. I said something a few years younger than I am and they still thought that was old. Actually their reaction was "Oh $hit! And I was going to ask you out." They were 18 and had thought I was about their age.

🙄 Too bad I can't find someone closer to my age...

... when you look around at your classmates and realize that most of their parents hadn't even met when you took chemistry the first time you were an undergrad.

... when you hear the kids behind you talking about your prof's age (after he giggles to himself about no one knowing what a slide rule is), and they say "He must be really old... like 40 or something" and all you can do is laugh....

... when you go to a medical school open house and the dean proudly states the age of their oldest student is 40... and you know you'll be 42 by the time you're an M1.

... when your prof asks everyone if they did xyz in high school and you have absolutely NO idea.

Beginning of the semester, a classmate and I were talking... just making small talk. He proceeded to ask me my age, and I told him. His jaw dropped and said "daaaaaaaaang... you're THAT old???" I felt like screaming. HELLO! I'M JUST 23!!! But obviously, 23 is kinda old to be a freshie in college. Oh well.

happened to me in a chem class last year...
realized that I am old enough to be my lab partner's father...
I was a senior in high school the tear he was born .....
he asked me a math question and I realized the last time I took a math course in college he was in kindergarten.

Last year I realized that the CITs at a summer camp I volunteer at were just born the year I started working there.

Time flies.. I remember my first day there so clearly... Now the time in between might be a little hazy though.

Last night at a TTU alumni event for applicants:


Young Lady mentions graduation from college last year, Dec '02.

Me: "Yeah, I graduated undergrad in December too . . . of 1989 🙂"

YL: "Wow, I was 9 years old then." 😱

-Middle school memories of space shuttle explosion, Reagan being shot, bell bottom jeans, tube tops.

-You remember the first career of John Travolta and saw Grease when released in the theater without adult supervision.

-In high school you got to use the schools first computers, a Commodore (PET?) with keyboard, CPU, and greenish monitor . . . all integrated into one combined unit.

-Your first PC consisted of a keyboard which you plugged into the TV. A floppy was an expensive upgrade, but fortunately a less expensive audio cassette memory device was available. The PC had no RAM and only utilized BASIC software.

-QuickBASIC was a new language while in college and all us geeky engineers were amazed at how fast it coded and ran. FORTRAN was a must for crunching numbers. You learned AutoCAD 1.0. If you had a virus, you should seek a Doc.

-You have used a card punch and mainframe computer.

-A brand new Corvette cost $18,000 loaded.

-You had a car with a factory four-barrel. New-fangled fuel injection was only found on a few performance cars.

-You easily distinguish between a Lincoln Mark I, II, and III.

-Only girls and gay men had piercings (and only in their ears).

-School lunch prices increased to $0.40

-Cheap gasoline was under $0.50 / gallon (I saw $0.39 once).

-The Beach Boys were young. Paul McCartney had Wings. John Bonham, Elvis, Jim Belushi, and Hendrix were alive.

-SNL had a small cast with Jim Belushi, Dan Akroid, Chevy Chase, et al. Rosanna Rosanna Danna and Jane something did the weekend news.

-Richard Pryor caught fire smoking some cocaine concoction.

-CRACK was something the plumber introduced you to.

-A thong was worn on the foot.

-Beta's outnumbered VHS's. A VCR was $1,000.

-WalMart sold mostly seconds and closeouts.

-School violence meant a fistfight. Paddlings were administered in the hall about 2 minutes following the infraction. You immediately returned to your seat (ouch!).

-Only cowboys wore cowboy boots. You could tell b/c they had poop stuck to the arch.

More you know you're old when:

...your first roller skates had 4 wheels and weren't inline, and the brake stopper was on the toe.

...your neighbor is your IM professor.

...your kids are on the same soccer team as your professor's kids.

Video tapes...???? What's that?? If you wanted to see a movie again you had to pay over and over before it left the theaters forever and you never saw it again.

Boom boxes.... the bigger the better. Even if you broke your shoulder carrying them.

Rotary phones that took forever to dial. No redial buttons, no caller IDs, no call waiting.......

Tab soft drinks, no diet coke or pepsi..... UNTIL......Huge hype about a NEW PRODUCT that was going to come out. Months and months of mailed hype about this secret product.........until........ at last....... every family in America was mailed one gumball made from this new secret product.....Nutrasweet.

If you wanted to play video games you had to go to the arcade and spend a bunch of quarters... until... low and behold a new product came to homes..... Atari

Home computers??????? Oh you mean a calculator. When you finally got a home computer you had to learn DOS. You wrote papers in Word Star.

After School Specials & Schoolhouse Rock were great (remember "conjunction-junction, what your function" and "I am just a lonely Bill--> then a Law).

Fat Albert. Grape Ape. Batman & Robin (Pow - Bang!-Biff). Catwoman. Mighty Mouse. Richocet Rabbit.

Star Wars & ET in the theater.

Arcade mania - I remember when the first game Space Invaders came out, then soon after came Asteroids.

SEARS Catalogue, 4-5" thick.

Gunsmoke.

Jetski was introduced.

Tubing at the lake using a rope tied to an overinflated truck tire inner tube (watch out for that stem).

Life preservers that looked like a belt.

8) When you see car accident photos and you recognize the YUGO in the picture

9) When discussing the AIDS epidemic, you fondly remember when this was not even a topic

10) You understand why older cars with only lap belts and no airbags had worse trauma vicitims than today's models.

When our "group" of four non-trads in chem class walks in on Monday morning still hung over b/c we all went out on Saturday to celebrate the lovely exam on Friday being over and everyone else is listening in to our rehash of the night in the bar with complete and total awe like "you guys are all old enough to go out?!?!?!"

When you're complaining to one of said non-trads about the class that your children are in together in grade school and we start going off on the teacher and others think we're talking about a professor at college, they're like "who's that" and we say a teacher at a local grade school that our kids have and they're like "wow, you're old enough to have kids?"

Another one of said non-trads above has a college-age daughter who is currently helping her with chem....and the rest of us by extension...

-Your classmates are talking about where they were on 9/11 and their stories all start with "I was sitting in _______ class my ______ year of high school", then they turn and look at you and you reply with "I was tending to wounded at the Pentagon. No I won't tell you about it"

You remember typing your programs on punch cards and then waiting 4 days for your turn to run -- just to find out you have one typo in the stack and need to figure out which of the 4,826 cards it's in.

Along the same lines, you remember when "floppy disks" were 12" and "mainframes" took up entire rooms and had big tape drives on them.

When having your own printer for your brand new spankin' blazin' fast 2 floppy disk drive (5.25") no hard drive (not invented yet) green screen IBM computer was a major luxury. And it was a 9 pin printer with a ribbon cartridge.

You remember when MTV first hit the airwaves and everyone said "that'll never last". (and for a bonus point, what was the very first video they played? anyone? anyone?)

I remmeber most of evrything on your list. I never got to see Journey in concert but I did go to a Prince Purple Rain concert. My best friend in high school always wore the same blue eye shadow everyday ! And she had wings that I used to call sauage rolls because they were so perfectly curled and stayed that way ALL day !
They still make Pop Rocks, btw... My 9 year old gets them once in a while.

Anna and Robert Scorpio...best couple on GH ever. My how Robin Scorpio has grown up into a responsible physician battling AIDS. Thanks for the list...it's bringing back some great memories! Luckily poprocks is still around, though I haven't had them for quite some time.

white out ribbon? Oh, yeah.. I remember when those came out. I took typing on a manual typewriter with white-out (and befor ethat, special typewriter erasers with those funky nylon brushes that didn't quite erase the mistakes). Those old fabric ribbons that you tried to keep going by re-inking them until they frayed and didn't have any fibers left. You remember - the ones that came on two spools and not a cartridge.

Anyone remember mimeograph machines when xerox was too expensive for the schools?

A Jimi Hendrix song (Cross Town Traffic) came on the radio the other day. Once of the students asked me who the song was by. I thought she was kidding- but no, she was quite serious.
