I was just wondering why U.S. schools are considered better than med schools in other countries, (like the carribean or africa or even europe)? Don't all med schools basically teach the same material?

I don't think U.S. schools are considered better. They just prepare the students to serve as doctors in the U.S. system better than the foreign schools. A rural practitioner in Africa needs different skills from someone practicing in a modern U.S. hospital with C.A.T. scans, access to modern labs etc.

It depends on what you are talking about. I think the OP was refering to the caribbean schools etc. that people who want to practice in the US use to sneak into medicine.

The caribbean schools have very low admission standards when compared to the US schools. These schools admit students who do not have the credentials to be accepted at a US school. The caribbean schools are the most infamous but there are plenty of overseas diploma mills (poland etc. )

Now the overseas schools that teach medicine for its own students with the assumption that they are going to practice in their own country are alright. For example an African school that teaches Africans physicians who will practice in Africa, as opposed to an African school that teaches underqualified American physicians who want to practice in America.

I think that lumping caribbean schools together with other foreign schools is not right. The sole purpose of carribean schools is to educate US residents who don't have what it takes to get into a US school

is Cal getting tough?

I think if you try hard enough at a caribbean school, you can be just as good as someone who graduated from Meharry medical.......

A few offshore med schools have the resources to make you a good doctor. Score high on the USMLE and show everyone what's up!

I m not applying right now, I just started my Jr year. I was just thinking about applications and the whole process. I am confident I can get into a US school, but I will probably still apply to the carribeans as a back up.

What does this mean?

I think what he meant to say is that there is a professor at Yale who is a graduate of SGU in the Carribean as well as residents at Stanford and Hopkins. It is not where you begin your undergraduate medical training that counts but how well you succeed and where you end up.
