Is anyone here interested in joining an online nontrad study group --mainly for accountability and to break the monotony of our dense study schedule.

I see that in the past many have benefited a lot from having others "around" ...even if just to check-in and out, lurk, chat, discuss subjects, what ever, but seeing that others have signed on and anyone can ask questions, has been done before with very good results.

A Skype group would be a good idea, since an icon pops up on the dashboard when someone logs in. Questions or not, even if we're busy memorizing, at least for the members to say "CHECKING IN!" to the group adds an element of accountability.

=======================================================================
EDIT:

I took the time to look around and I found a nice platform made especially for Online Study Groups.

Maybe others were already familiar with this, but it's new to me and I like that it's made especially for this purpose.

To join go to:

2) See the red arrows above? Enter a group code.

GBPY1E *--- Nontrad Med Group - To Check-in and out when studying, in general.

MVF7YM *---MCAT Test Prep Group

subscribe.jpg

I worried Skype would be too distracting and messy, and on first glance this seems cleaner.

1) I think the side-bar chat would be good to check-in and out.

2) The main feed would be good for discussions... it has nested replies and you can "pin" the threads to follow it from your "Watchlist."

It's browser based, so no alerts on your dashboard to distract you, like Skype.

It's another option, for those long days studying, other NonTrads doing the same thing as you can be just a click away...

Count me in.

Count me in.

Nice!

The goal is to start Monday. So far there's 3 nontrads and I decided to ask here, since the more the merrier, and it works out best if we can build a good group.

If you really want accountability, you might consider having each person in the group pair up with a study buddy who will keep you honest. It's all well and good to show up to an exercise class full of friendly acquaintances every now and then when you feel up to it, but quite another to train for a marathon with a partner who will be running alone if you don't show up.

If you all are interested in setting up a system like that, I'd be happy to join too. But I have to warn my future partner now that I'm totally type A. ;)

Think this would work?

I think I'd be interested, but I'm keeping a really wacky schedule right now working nights and going to class during the day...

Yea. That's exactly the point. We're all busy nontrads, which is why the accountability factor helps.

I think it would work if we stop to consider the needs of the nontrad group and build a good system. I'm loving the suggestion made by QofQuimica! It hits the nail on the head.

For my part I work full-time independently (translating medical documents between 3 languages) and I'm volunteering in a nonprofit organization that has a free-clinic in Latin America (with specialists from Europe) so I'm out of the country and the nonprofit drains a lot of my time, but I already have all of the requirements for medical school, and most of the paperwork, and now it's just a matter of MAKING the time for serious test review. No excuses.

I really need this too!! I am working two jobs and taking self-paced biochem...bad combination! I will PM you.

This may keep me from going days without studying... Count me in

I think it would help those of us who want a partner to post what we're looking for. I'd like to pair up w/ someone who is studying for a big standardized test like the MCAT while working 60+ hours per week. I'm on a test study schedule myself, one for late Feb and one for late April. So if you'll be taking your test around either of those times, and you're serious about trying to keep to a study schedule, and you want to partner, post here or shoot me a PM.

For those interested in a study partner, how about if we talk about our plans, and anyone interested can PM the person.

Type of study partner:
----Test Prep study partner ---- if so, test date
---- Regular study partner ------- if so, premed student or medical student

Other Responsibilities keeping you from studying
1) Work hours --- FT, PT or OT
2) Classes --- currently attending classes or done with classes
3) Kids/ No Kids

STUDY NEEDS
1) Study Schedule --- from now until what month ---or ongoing
2) Study Time ----- AMs PMs or Varies
3) Study Needs ---- review material *and* accountability ---- or just for accountability / serious about keeping a study schedule

Even if you have a study partner who you report to daily for accountability, you can also join the main nontrad group with everyone.

PM me you Skype address --or add "night.owly" as a contact -- and I'll add you to the main group chat!

How's everyone doing? I'm personally very busy today.. but I'm going to MAKE room for test prep.

A friend asked me why do this - I replied that medicine is like Everest. You can climb alone. You can climb with others who want it as much as you do. What ever works best for you. Either way, you have to do the work yourself. I'm already driven and very independent, but something about this inspires me to push myself further. Hard to describe.

Okay. Regarding the general group, I did a test run with Skype and I agree that seeing the icon light up every time a message is posted is not ideal.

I tried Google Groups and it doesn't distract you, and it allows embedding notes, documents and screenshots, etc. It's one option.

Does anyone have any suggestions that might benefit the group better?

I'm interested, although I agree the Skype option is too distracting to me, but I am up for other options!!

Type of study partner:

1) Work hours --- I work full time, (6am - 6:30 pm, mon-thurs)
2) Classes --- currently in 9 credit hours
3) Kids/ No Kids --- 1 baby girl, 17 months

STUDY NEEDS
1) Study Schedule --- Ongoing - long term (I think I need to add a year to my post-bacc bc my last semester grades were all B's =( so disappointed and upset about this.
2) Study Time ---- Late - my classes end around 10pm, and I'm central time. Also available fri- sun weekends.
3) Study Needs ---- accountability and discipline (I think this is my problem?)

With google + we could look into making our own circle. Haven't played with it much, but that is an idea.

My girlfriend is type A. She's an M2 though, so it's a little tough for me to keep up given that I don't want to be studying like a med student for an extra year :).

Hi, everyone.

Update! If someone one wants to take the initiative to build the "General Chat" there's a lot of interest here for it.
Personally, I like the buddy system and it's working for me, so I'm going to stick with that.

If others want to try it, post your info here or contact someone above. You decide what works best for you, but I'm in a 3 month test-prep marathon, and since I don't need a tutor, and I'm comfortable with the material, what helps me is more like a jogging buddy, rain or shine... so what we do is we check-in with each other once a day, and every day we set a study target for the next day like "X pages" or "X hours" and the next day we check-in with each other and see how we did. Rinse. Repeat!

I don't need a tutor. Just for accountability and check in with each other about progress ... PM if interested

Cool thread, great idea NightOwl!

I'd love to find a study buddy here to check in with 1x a day to set targets/goals/help push each other/etc. I've had "training" partners before while doing triathlons and could see how that extra motivation and friendship from a study partner could help push each other to greater heights!

Type of study partner:
----MCAT accountability ---- July 6
---- Also looking for an application review partner (e.g. personal statement exchange)

Other Responsibilities keeping you from studying
1) Work hours --- FT/PT
2) Classes --- 2 Classes (Organic Chem 2 and Physics 2 ---post-bacc (do well in classes and generally very disciplined because there is a teacher to be accountable to, I more need help with MCAT accountability)
3) Kids/ No Kids: No kids, but wife and family responsibilities. She is in a graduate program too and I do have to pull my weight.

STUDY NEEDS
1) Study Schedule --- from now until July
2) Study Time ----- PM weekly check in
3) Study Needs ---- review med school app *and* accountability, serious about keeping a study schedule

I'm a non-trad B.S. in dual major with 3.8 undergrad and currently a 4.0 sGPA with only two classes to go. I just have been able to show up to tests with minimal studying and get A's my whole life, I know the MCAT is not one of those tests, but it's hard to stay disciplined when I am stuck in what seems like 5 different worlds. I don't have tons of extra time, but I was thinking a weekly check in would be nice.

good idea

I know I can't fit it in, so I won't waste your time, but good idea :D

Hi!

I would love a study partner.

Currently work part time and want to dedicate myself full time to the MCAT and have it done and behind me.
No classes - grateful to have finished all my prereq's!
And no kids.

Looking for someone to keep accountability with and maybe even talk to time to time - that helps me get the material into my head.

Cheers!

Nicole
