Are there any women out there who entered med school over age 35, who can tell their stories? Or can anyone refer me to some stories of some over-35 female med students?

I am 31, going to a junior college, and if I get in, then I will be probably entering med school at 35.

I am also single/childless which is a strange place to be because I don't know where everything is going to fit in.

I have seen a number of stories of *men* who entered med school over the age of 35.

pish posh - maybe men are just more outspoken about it. You're ahead of me at the moment, (though I think I can make it to your status without being drown or eaten in the next few years or so), so I have no 35+ tales or adventures. I know that there are PLENTY of women on this site:
www.mommd.com with lots of stories and guidance - there are also men, teens and people from all walks of life, not just mommies.

I was well over 35 when I applied and was accepted to medical school. I am now a PGY-4 general surgery resident who will do a fellowship in vascular surgery when I am finished with general surgery residency. I was a university professor (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) before medical school and I am engaged with no children. (Did not want children).

My best friend in medical school was over 35 and had been in Operation Desert Storm. She graduated from West Point and had been attached to the Pentagon when she was accepted. She is now a Lt. Colonel USA and working on a residency in Aerospace Medicine. She was single and is now engaged; wants to have children and her career.

My other friend was over 35 already had raised her children and had had a career in nursing. She went back to school, picked up the pre-med courses that she needed and was accepted to medical school. She is now a resident in Family Medicine.

There was another woman at my medical school, who was accepted when I was a third year medical student. She was 53 and had been a minister before attempting medical school. She was a graduate of the Yale Divinity School. She also went into Family Medicine.

There are a fair number of us out there who have had careers and are now practicing physicians.

I was 38 when I applied and accepted to a variety of schools. Age is NOT an issue IF you are competitive all around gpa/mcat and have excellent lor's, and commitment to serving usually demonstrated via altruistic endeavors.

I was also 38 when I was accepted to medschool - currently in 2nd year and turning 40 soon. My background was totally unrelated to medicine, so my biggest obstacle was explaining/proving to them why the big switch and why now. My kids are all in school now, which was one of the things I was waiting for before starting down this long road.

I'm 35 and in my first year of med school. I *almost* didn't apply thinking I was too old! Don't let the graphs in the MSAR scare you out of doing it. I had an application experience that was successful beyond my wildest dreams and I clicked with a school that puts MUCH weight on your background and the obstacles you went through to get to this point. Its a sign to them of just how much you want this, and just how hard you will work once you're in.

If this is something you *truly* want, you *must* give it your all. You don't want to be a granny in your rocking chair thinking "Geez, I didn't even try!"

When I got in, my superviser at work gave me a beautiful bookmark that reads:

"It's never to late to be what you might have been." George Eliot

Nurse for ~20yrs, mother of 5, grandmother of 2, age 43, doing well.

It's never too late. I'll be 36 at grad.

If you say, "I'll be 38 when I enter med school...", you will be 38 anyway, might as well be in med school!
