Hey guys,

Just wanted to hear from your collective expertise...

With the economy the way it is now, what do you think the outlook on nontraditional careers will be 2 years from now?

I mean managed care, industry, FDA, etc positions where you utilize clinical skills along with an ability to write and do business.

Seems like industry keeps on slashing jobs so that is a gloomy outlook.

Managed care jobs seem to require residencies....

Thanks and I appreciate all input!

These opportunities will always be there, but you have to pursue them and not the other way around. Look at where you want to be, meet people that already are there, and figure out how to become like them. Will it take a residency? An industry fellowship? Do you need to take on leadership roles in student organizations? How about taking on a 2nd degree, whether while in pharmacy school or afterwards?

If you want to do something other than vanilla pharmacy, you can't be a vanilla pharmacist.

As far as the outlook... I think these jobs will become more and more competitive. I believe demand for traditional pharmacists is slowing, and plenty of people will be seeking new practice settings.

How about a vanilla pharmacist with sprinkles? 😉 Speaking of vanilla... whenever I worked at Sonic as a carhop in high school a customer told me that he liked my vanilla legs.
