Any experiences navigating the jail or csu job market in Marin County vs Sonoma s Solano vs other Northern CA/Bay Area jails? Any recommendations on where to start? Wellpath…seems to be Sonoma’s preference and Marin has little turnover.

I find the Bay Area jail/CSU entry point to be a bit insular as a consequence of being a “saturation market“ (high cost of living and lots of psychiatrists). The roles with a reasonable work/life balance, great upper management, and good pay tend to go internally or through local word of mouth.

I have intermittently considered TBH based on positive experiences shared by friends. Do wonder about their newer contracts (ie Alameda County/Dublin etc) likely only want full time admin only roles to deal w/ DOJ etc. They weirdly backed out of interview invites x2 at a new site (suspect dysfunctional county hiring interface and nebulous new contract)…

A lot of these CA employers with county contracts probably don’t have an actual jobs until they’ve recruited enough applicants first (ehem Orbit).

Jail admin is a tough sell in county jails (would never do it full time).

Prison will give you the best return per hour worked, especially if you are contractor. Stockton prison pays close to $345 per hours (contractor)
However, not everyone can tolerate prison settings.

I believe being a contractor vs a state employee is important here. No one wants to live in Stockton, so contractors have decent job security there. The bay area though, psychiatrists tend to flock there and I'd personally not be all that comfortable with a contractor position that could go belly under the second they feel like it.

I never wanted to work for the state given some dysfunctional hiring practice experiences (w/ cdcr anyway, but sounds site specific). DSH maybe though they don’t always love part time, like much of the public sector/civil servant roles.

Corporate entities running jails, ie Liberty or wellpath have also been unappealing. Mostly stuck to county run jails, did wonder about San Quentin at one point. Marin is not exactly saturated jail wise (the need probably still exceeds supply) but only funding enough to have tbh supply 6-7 I think. Would consider tbh but getting suspicious of some of their newer contracts being shaky.
