I have a quick question about NS and I thought that this area would yield me the best answers. What drugs are commonly hung in the hospitals that are not compatible with NS? Like, is there a certain drug that won't be able to piggyback with a NS flush afterwards? The software at my clinical site doesn't let me choose normal saline as an option for a compatibility check. The only thing I can check is if the bag is compatible with D5W or as is compatible w/ electrolytes like potassium chloride or something else.

Amphotericin B needs to be flushed before and after with D5W.

I believe Acyclovir has a super short stability in NS, but can't recall. Micromedex will check with NS if you pick the single drug option.

My additions to the list of incomaptibilities with NS:idea:: amiodarone, diazepam, ampicillin and atracurium.

Amiodarone is usually put in D5W because the information on NS expiration is conflicting.
Ampicillin can go in NS with 8hr room temp expiration ( 48hrs refrigerated expiration at least for conc of 30mg/ml for peds at my hospital). If ampicillin is made in D5W it gets a 2 hour expiration hence why NS is more ideal.
