I am planning to commence my post-bacc course work this fall on a part time basis. I was originally looking at Harvard Extension; however, I recently found out that Northeastern offers the same pre-med courses to part time students. And they do provide advising services, including the processing of LOR's. And, the Northeastern classes are much more convenient to me time wise. Due to my current job, I really cannot spend more than 2 nights per week in class.

I realize that HES has a great reputation (and is cheaper than NU to boot). However, has anyone done the Northeastern program? Comments about it being good or bad would be appreciated. Does it really matter to medical schools where I do my courses?

Unless this is a new thing, NEU's postbac is more of a do-it-yourself, a la carte deal. I dont think it would have the structure of a HES.

This doesnt mean you cant be successful in the program and garner multiple accepts from a superb showing in their classes.

Do well (think 3.5 and higher) and regardless of where you took your classes, you will be in a good place when the time comes for applying.

That being said- NEU will have a higher price tag, but also more flexibility course and time wise. Also, make sure your confirm where your classes are, as some classes may meet at the Burlington campus, so dont get stuck out there by mistake.

Good luck! 👍

The program at NU isn't formal. Basically, if you take two or more classes, you can use their advising services. When I started looking at these programs this is where I started (I'm an NU alum). However, since there isn't any dedicated staff for postbaccers, I'd be wary of the amount of attention they'll give you, as my experience with my advisors wasn't always what you'd call top-notch (although some were fantastic), and NU isn't known for producing premeds, so I'm not sure how much experience they have in the matter. The primary things that brought me to HES was the classes being geared toward medicine (Check out the website for the physics courses for an example), and the single focus of the program and staff.

I'll be at HES in the fall.
