I am a DO with a slight interest in psych. Does anyone know how competitive some of the northern Cali programs are, specifically UC Davis and San Mateo as well as any of the others? Do they require the USMLE, or is the COMLEX acceptable? I will be an OMS II this fall and am just trying to get an idea what scores I should be shooting for and whether or not the USMLE would help, so any feedback would be great!

and one more question - how frendly are they to IMG?

Nika, if you're an IMG and interested in applying to any programs in CA, you will need a PTAL from the Medical Board of California. The application is available on their website; it requires fingerprinting and certified documents as well as forms filled out from your medical school and each of your rotations, and the process costs over $500. I would suggest starting it ASAP, as they say it takes up to 90 days to process.

Hey--I interviewed at San Mateo and I can tell you it's VERY competitive to get in. They only have 4 residents per year and it was very hard for me to get an interview there--that said, it was an impressive program well worth a look. In general, No. cal schools are very hard to get into! I would recommend applying to some LA area schools too, as they are slightly easier to get into. In fact a P.D. at an LA program told me there were more spaces than applicants, so that each year they have to go quite low in the match. Take home message: Apply to So.Cal as well as No.Cal.
Cheers

Tank you! I've got it already.
I interested in any programs in West cost. Any suggestion?

Depends on where's the border of Northen CA, but if you include Fresno in your map, your chance should not be bad. This year I heard they have minimum 1 DO there. And also, I heard they have 3 DOs in SFV.

Bottom line is, applying to the whole CA would only help, especially since last year, there was 1 less program in California. Hope this helps.

And regarding IMGs, probably UCD, Fresno, Kern, USC, Cedars Sinai, Loma Linda, ........ would give interviews.

There is an IMG in the PGY2 class at UCSF.

-AT.

Tank you for advice!
