hi everyone,

new to this forum! i'm interviewing at Feinberg School of Medicine next week for northwestern's 7-year ba/md (hpme) program. i was wondering if anyone had been through the process or had any insight to share about the interviews. i know the most important thing is to stress your commitment to medicine / why you want to be a doctor. any other questions likely to come up?

thanks 🙂

Pretty darned important to be able to explain 'why NU, why Feinberg?' via a 7 year program that forecloses the possibility of attending any other med schools...

I would love to hear the answer to this question...

Visit CollegeConfidential's Multiple Degrees forum. They have an extremely long thread there dedicated to HPME. Students in the program have posted there with interview tips and applicants this cycle have also reported back on what happened at their interview.

That's not true. You can apply to other med schools if you want (although, why would you?).

Make sure you emphasize how sure you are of going into medicine and demonstrate maturity. I think maturity is going to be key.

That would seem to be tricky given that in this program you enter med school after 3 years - are students awarded their BS/BA at the end of the 3 years? I don't know - just asking...

If you are saying that you can change your mind, I am sure that is true. But this is not a 8 year program which would allow the student to apply to other med schools after 3 years...

I am questioning what any 17/18 year old can possibly know about med school that would allow him/her to make a fully informed decision before leaving high school. I think there is tremendous value to separating the college experience from med school, and researching med schools, and applying broadly, and interviewing as broadly as possible.

College is a time of discovery - this program looks like a trap to me.

HPME has the option of extending the undergrad from 3 to 4 years. It's actually quite a flexible program compared to some other ones.

Coolio...

I still think that there is something screwed up about high schoolers locking in on a specific med school before they have set foot on a college campus.

Maybe I feel that way because I am a non trad who did not decide on medicine until a few years after graduating college. My life experiences led me to choose medicine - a 17 year old frankly hasn't had any such life experiences, and programs like this put the blinders on these kids...

Whatever. Good luck.
