For anyone who viewed this or was interested:
I attended the info session last night and there was some good information, as well as some stuff you could easily find on their website.
Northwestern's post bacc pre med program now has a physician shadowing program, now in it's second year. It is through Northwestern Memorial Hospital and sounds like it would be helpful for those who want to shadow. Also a good in for a volunteering opportunity,
Their acceptance rate is fluid. They admit those they feel will be successful in the program and meet the minimum requirements. There is not a set number of spots. They look closely at the personal statement and said they have rejected based on that. They look closely at science and math on transcripts. The program is for career changers, not academic enhancement. They actually said for record enhancers to not even waste time applying.
Application for fall quarter start of the 21 month option is June 1. They said once all materials are received (LOR, transcripts, etc.,) that there is an approximately 3 week response time for a decision. Those wanting to do the 12 or 15 month options must start in summer quarter, and hence, would have to wait until Summer 2015. You can still take courses as a student-at-large.
There was a 3rd year medical student at the meeting who answered questions. He went through the post bacc pre med program at NU and is now a medical student there. Very helpful and seemed very satisfied with the experience. Undergrad major was not science based at all.
No official MCAT prep, but pre medical student organization actually organizes a practice run under testing conditions. Student discount on Kaplan because Kaplan actually uses NU facilities to teach the class.
Financial aid is available in the form of loans. Price is very competitive with other Chicago universities and lower than Loyola, Depaul, and Roosevelt U.
Classes are at night during the week, with labs on Saturday. Med student approximated labs were 9-5ish on Saturday. Same facilities and instructors as NU regular day school for traditional students. All post bacc pre med classes are held at Evanston and use the same labs as traditional students. Multi-million dollar science labs, that is.
They help with LOR for med school. They have an adviser who works with all professional health career students in the School of Continuing Studies.
Overall, great turn out for the meeting and if anyone has any questions regarding the program, PM me. I am currently awaiting their response as I officially submitted my application yesterday.
