I have been faithfully calling/writing letters since May, and I get the same response everytime I call. They note down my name, AAMC ID and tell me there's been no movement on the waitlist. Is Dean Brown really making all the decisions? Does anyone out there have ANY information about the waitlist other than there's about 100 people on it and that they took 30 last year (out of 170). Has anyone been accepted yet off the waitlist???

I called last monday(6/10) and according to them, there has not been any movement yet . She said that Dean Brown makes the decisions and has started to look over the alternate list.
She expects some movement to start in a week or so.

I'm still waiting for that call.

So I think it's safe to assume that as of now no one has been taken off the list? I don't know if it's a relief or what.

Safe to assume as of last Monday.
I don't know about the relief part, it could be that they don't need to take anyone from the list (sad) or they are moving slowly (neutral) or they are getting ready to call us tomorrow (happy).

What's been puzzling me is that there are threads about waitlists for other schools that are super long and that whenever I or anyone else starts one for NUMS, it quickly dies out! Does this speak of the fact that there aren't that many interested in NUMS? Man I hope so!

I've noticed that too. I did reply to your June 5th NUMS thread but it's on page 12 now I think.

Maybe there isn't a lot of SDNers interested in NUMS.

NUMS waitlisters:

the admin sent us open ended acceptance letters for NU, with no deposit required. so essentially, a hypothetical may 15th deadline isn't as applicable for NUMS as it may be for other schools. yet, i know that admins know from AMCAS, what schools you've been accepted at, so they are probably checking up on students who are still holding more than one. i'm sure that there will be alot of movement, i met a significant number of people at the NUMS second look weekend who were accepted to top 10 schools, while an even greater number of people were waitlisted at top 10 schools.

good luck

Thanks for the info Nuclearrabbit.
So they didn't give a time to accept a seat? Say two weeks?

And what do you mean by significant? Give me number range that you would say is significant

Thanks

Thanks for the info! I also don't know whether to keep buggin them or not.

Goku, have you been accepted anywhere else? I've been accepted at MCW but I'm not sure what to do about this waitlist thing. I much prefer NUMS but orientation is aug 12 at MCW. i'm not sure what to do about the housing situation either.

C'mon there's gotta be more people on sdn waitlisted by NUMS!

Moo, unfortunately I'm like the kid without any friends. no acceptances just sitting in limbo on waitlists 😕

I'm wondering if NUMS sent out more acceptances this year since the waitlist last year was significant bigger than this years (170, 100). The woman I spoke to on Monday said that they're have been withdrawals, but not enough to go through the waitlist. She said I should sit tight until maybe mid-July.

Goku, sorry about that... I'm sure you'll get off one..

Soren, how did you pry this information out of them? Everytime I ask they just give me the standard "Dean Brown is looking over the list now."

I'm not sure if they accept more than the class size, if they do, it must be by a very small margin. again, at second look weekend, i heard that the number of people who attended was approximately around the class size (120 -non HPME).
it can be argued that more than this number were accepted, and that not everyone chose to go to the second look weekend. yet, the trip was paid for, so i doubt that many people opted not to go.
as for the number of people who were accepted to schools ranked higher, goku, if i had to make a percentage approximation, i'd say (20-30%) were accepted to schools ranked higher than NUMS by us news standards. (of course i think that us news standards are wacked) and i'd say another (30-40%) were waitlisted at higher rank schools, and about 50% were gung-ho for sure going to NUMS.
realize that my numbers are only approximations, and that i didn't meet (or talk about the application process) with everyone.

moo and the NU crew: (hey, that kinda rhymes)

I'd be all excited about the NUMS waitlist and getting off it, and posting messages and PMing each other, too. But it helps if they invite you to an interview, first. 🙂 Hope to see you guys joining us future Chicagoans across town! If there's anything at all you've done in the past year that they don't know yet- slap it on yet another letter of interest/intent and send it to the good Dean Brown. g'luck getting off the list.

Hey, I am a student at NUMS and I don't know how the waitlist really works, but I do know of at least one person in our class who was on the waitlist and didn't find out he got in until 2 days before the first day of class started...

Don't know if that's common or not.

I just called NUMS (6/18) and the lady I spoke to said that they expect the list to start moving in July. She said people can't seem to make up their mind. I guess the open-ended acceptance letter had something to do with it. She also said orientation beings August 25th (she wasn't 100% positive of this). 13 days til July. 😕

So what does this "open-ended" acceptance letter say exactly? That there is no deadline for withdrawing and holding on to multiple accepts? That's just cruel!

there is no deposit required to hold a seat.
i'm sure there will be movement, be patient.
remember, 50% of interviewers are ultimately offered a seat (which is alot higher than most schools), so keep your phalanges crossed.

does anyone know the company that has the best cell phone reception near NU?

Well, I just withdrew from NUMS. I hope they start moving you guys off the waitlist soon! Good luck! 😛

I too just withdrew from NUMS (I was looking for this thread yesterday).

And I believe that means there are two more first year, full-tuition scholarships available for members of the incoming class.

I also wanted to add some additional information/clear up some questions that I happen to know about. Orientation starts on Monday, August 26, 2002.

In terms of the number of acceptees, I sat with Hallen (the coordinator) at the Second Look Weekend Saturday Breakfast, and she told me that they had too many people interested in the weekend, so some people (not a lot) who wanted to come were actually turned away. She also said there were approximately 150 people at the weekend, but I don't know if the HPME people were invited.

On the bright side though, of the main people I personally hung out with the majority of the weekend and have kept in touch with, only one of five is still going. Small sample size, I know, but still encouraging.

Hopefully you'll hear something soon!!!

Just an update for those of you waitlisted at NUMS...

Today I received a letter from them that asked me to send in an enclosed "Intent to Matriculate" form if I was still planning to matriculate. (apparently they haven't processed my withdrawal letter.)

So if everyone received this letter, then they will have a better idea of the size of the class after the deadline, July 9th. So I would anticipate some waitlist movement at that point.

Good luck to all of you waiting!!!

Thanks for all the info! I called em today but the lady said no movement yet still.

Any news? I called today and still nothing....

bump... anyone hear anything yet?

Hi all,

Just wanted to post some new (perhaps insignificant) info. I got an email today from one of the student orientation coordinators about one of the events for orientation week. Not interesting, I know. But there were 184 email addresses on the list. Thought that might be helpful.

At the end it said, "and please let me know if you're not coming." I also recognized another email from the list--one of my new classmates at Michigan.

So apparently this means that they haven't completely processed a lot of the withdrawals yet. This is the third time I've notified their office that I'm not coming.

Anyway, continued luck...

Thanks for the info!
