In my current department there are huge problems, so many people are either simply unwilling or incapable of doing the job, multiple people are lazy to the point of it being dangerous and there is just so much dishonesty. I feel that if there are problems they should be highlighted and dealt with, at my previous hospital if there was an issue you were expected to raise it and it would be dealt with immediately, here though any time I say anything I am the bad guy. I know the culture in the US is to accept being treated badly so people don't mess with you but this isn't the case as much in the UK but it has caused me problems. When it's things that are just annoying it's not so bad but when things are actually dangerous am I seriously meant to just keep quiet? How do you not complain? It drives me mad!
 
Yikes. Plenty of stories around about NHS whistleblowers not making a difference to the organisation but sending their careers into freefall. So be careful.

Don't make informal complaints or be the person that is grumbling. You will get nowhere and people will be keen to point the finger at you at the slightest provocation.

If you make a formal complaint, make sure that you fully understand the process before you start, and either have a union official or lawyer at your back before you start. Limit the subject matter of your complaint to something witnessed, documented, dangerous and undeniable.

If you choose to whistleblow through a third party, make sure that your anonymity is cast-iron.

I'm leaving the department for somewhere hopefully much nicer anyway and I have tried to make things better but I feel trying to just isn't worth it. Nothing happens anyway but then that makes me feel crappy. At present it is certain individuals rather than the department as a whole that is unsafe, certain seniors know about at least some of the issues though likely not all but ignore things anyway. I'm hoping my new department will be better but what if it's not? For general bad treatment rather than actual safety issues how do you not let it get to you?
 
get the hell out if you can. otherwise, take care of YOUR patients and deal with those issues, b/c you can't personally save the entire world yourself.
