Interesting op-ed appearing in the new issue of AJPE.

I don't agree with their argument that more residency programs are needed, but the authors make some good points about some unintended consequences of eliminating the scramble.

There are good points across the board, however I think the second match provides for more transparency as past candidates who didn't match would spend $$ only to find out the program gave their slot to someone thus wasting $$ and it was unfair (I have a few students in the past tell me this).
