Hi everyone,
I know this question has been asked many times, but my there are some differences between my app and that of others, so I thought I would ask...do I have a chance of getting into US medical schools? ( I have residency in MN)

Science GPA: 3.3
Overall GPA: 3.5
MCAT: 30R

Employment Experiences:
1) Worked in a neuro research lab for 7 montsh
2) Worked in a cancer research lab for 1.5 years
3) Volunteered in a biochem research lab for 1 year

**no publications yet

4) TA for anatomy, biology and physiology lab for 3 years
5) Worked as a medical scribe in the ER for 8 months
6) Math tutor for Americorps (present)

Volunteer Experiences:
1) Volunteered in children's hospital for 9 months
2) Volunteered at a museum and zoo during summer for 3 months each
3) volunteered in a homeless shelter for 4 months
4) Big Brothers Big Sisters for 1 year

Student group experiences:
-Colleges against cancer board member for 1 semester

My undergraduate degree is in genetics and I have taken many upper level courses...the problem is that I had a habit of overloading my schedule and I ended up with B's in a lot of those classes

I have 3 W's on my transcript...I have since retaken 2 of those classes and I did well in them. I couldn't retake the other one because they stopped offering the class.

I had 1 C in an Astronomy class that I didn't even need...I took it for fun, didn't take it seriously and ended up always putting off studying for that class. I re-took it immediately and got an A, but I am pretty sure it looks pretty weird on my transcript to get a C in a class that I didn't even need.

My LORs and personal statement are pretty good now (from what I have heard). I am applying to both MD and DO schools but the problem is I don't have DO shadowing experience (every DO I called in my city has said no). I do have a letter from a physician though.

Do I stand a chance at MD or DO schools?

Yes, you have a chance at both MD and DO schools. As of right now, you're very competetive for any DO school, but you' a tad on the weak side for MD. I think you'll be OK with the low-tier schools like Rosy Franklin and NYMC, but U MN is a pretty good school, so I don't know about that one. Definitely rule out Mayo as well.

You have a good amount of research and volunteering. Do you have any shadowing?

Your MCAT is very OK.

Your sGPA is a little on the weak side, but as Goro said you have a good chance at some low-tier Med schools, and you're pretty competitive for DO schools.

Thank you for your feedback as well! Actually, I worked as a medical scribe for 8 months and this is basically paid-shadowing and I got to learn a lot about medicine at the same time...really reinforced my interest to become a doctor 🙂
