Hi all.

I'm a freshman neurosci major at my university, and I've always had med school in the back of my mind, but I recently shadowed a doctor over spring break and I know that I really want to pursue this. Here's the thing, my grades are definitely not as great as I'd hoped and I kind of started caring about my grades a bit too late. The grades for all the courses I've taken so far are as follows:

Genchem 1: C-
Genchem 1 retake: B (So I'm assuming it'll end up as a C)
Cell Bio (We don't have a general bio here, it's cell bio plus a 300 level): C
Psyc: A
Comm: A
World Hist.: A
Statistics: A
Microbio: B+
Micro Lab: B

I'm primarily worried about my bio and chem grades since they're the pre-reqs and both C's. Where do I go from here?

Don't worry too much, you didn't figure this out "too late" at all 🙂

Just do better in some higher level bio or chem classes to convince the med schools you're capable of handling the rigor of med school.

Both grades are counted by AMCAS for repeated courses independent from your school's policy. So both the C- and the B will appear and be factored into your AMCAS GPA.

But you should be fine. You've got a lot ahead of you and you can still do well and be accepted.

I agree with everyone, plenty of time! Not only to raise your GPA, but show that you have what it takes to do well in difficult classes. It sounds like you've done some thinking and really want to pursue medical school, so just put in the effort and you'll be fine. Good luck!

Just do well from here on out. Even if it means you have to take a slightly lighter courseload.

Assuming 4 credits per lecture and 1 credit per lab your GPA is roughly 3.24. Not that horrible. Though your math and science grades are concerning. Your science/math GPA is a 2.81 right now. You need to figure out what it is you are having trouble with and fix it. If you do poorly on those subjects in your courses, chances are you will do poorly when it comes to the MCAT. You need to stop having to retake courses too because as what happened if you get a C- then only get a B the second time around you are shooting yourself in the foot because you didn't really learn from your mistakes. Obviously a 3.0 is much better than a 1.7 but not good enough. You haven't shown that you can master any of the science subjects. But yes as the others have said you have plenty of time to improve your GPA, but obviously you have to fix the problem you are having with those classes.

Like everyone else said, its great that you have figured out that something needs to change. It might be possible that you might need a little extra help in your courses. Keep on top of the material, and if you find yourself still having trouble, try talking to the professor. Most of them are pretty willing to help, and not to mention, it could potentially open the door for a future letter of recommendation from them. Just something to keep in mind. If you really want to go to med school, you just need to stay committed and keep your head up. Its not too late.

Good Luck!

I forgot- if there's a TA they can sometimes be helpful, and the proff might know of tutors for the class. I used a tutor for orgo1 and it really helped.

Hey,
My grandpa has always told me that a man's character is not built from falling, it's built in the man's getting up. I've had a way bumpier start to college than most but my grandfather's words have kept it all in perspective. You have time to dictate how you get up and I think you can and will make the best of it. Don't worry about what's happened, there's not much you can do to change that. Get up, dust off, and keep trucking. You have an entire network of anonymous cyber supporters rooting for you so give 'em hell kid.

Good Luck, I'm sure you won't let us down!!!:luck::luck::luck::luck:

damn, ur swole dude.

OP, you are a freshman. it's way too early to be freakin out and whatnot.

Thanks everyone! You've all been really helpful. I haven't actually reached the "freaking-out stage" yet, but I'm still worried about how much damage the two C's will do when I apply in 3-4 years.

I completely understand what you're saying, and I really appreciate the GPA input. I actually do know what the problem was to be honest, the C in Cell Bio came from me being just really irresponsible my 1st semester of college. The chem grades came from the fact that I didn't make an effort to see a tutor and just tried to figure out what I didn't understand by myself.

I do know what I need to change though, I've even taken a study skills workshop to improve some study habits.

Kill organic chemistry and biochem (as well as all of your other classes) and they will see that those 2 C's were just a fluke. Also 8 credit hours is hardly anything when you've completed 110+ credit hours. Don't sweat it, just learn from your mistakes and improve. You can do it.
