Hello,

I am a CA resident with 25MCAT and a 507 retake. I have a 3.6gpa and a 3.3sGPA.
I also have various volunteering (both clinical and nonclinical) experience, as well as a lor from a DO physician that I shadowed for ~50 hours.

I applied to the following schools:

Western
Touro CA
Touro Nevada
Touro NY
KCUMB
LECOM-B
De Moines
AT Still

For some of these schools, I was complete in late July, and for the rest of them, I received the complete email around mid August.

So far, I only have an ii from KCUMB, and a pre interview hold from Western, and Touro Nevada. So far, I have not been rejected at any of the schools either. I was expecting a lot more interview invites, and as time goes on, I am getting more nervous. Is there anything that I can do in the meantime to increase my chances of getting an ii? Also, why is it that I haven't heard back from the schools in such a long time?

I can say you should feel fortunate to have received an II from KCUMB, they are a very good D.O. school. The next thing I want to say is that patience is virtue..calm down and take a deep breath. It is still very early in the cycle, well, for the most part. Many of these schools are receiving upwards of 5-7k applications they have to go through. Your stats are good, so I can only imagine if you have great ECs then you should be in excellent shape in the near future, stay positive and believe in yourself...it will come with time.

I would definitely apply more broadly. Your list is too short. Applying to 8 schools and half of them being top tier/near top tier is not a good idea. Your sGPA is below average and MCAT just slightly above average.

Also, you're competing for about 150-200 spots in a sea of 5k-7k (maybe even over 9k) applicants. You need to add some more schools, just in case. Many of these schools have a 3.4-3.5 average sGPA/sGPA with a 506+ MCAT. KCUMB is a good school, but there should be more backup plans in place in case you don't get accepted. An acceptance is an acceptance, and that should be your priority.

New schools like CUSOM already have a 3.2 sGPA cutoff that they autoscreen.

Since you say you were complete since July/August, then you were passed during their review process (put you on hold) since I've already gotten II's from some of those schools you listed months ago and I applied around the same time (Complete by July/August.)

If you don't get an interview invite by the end of this year, you may be interviewing for waitlist spots because you'll be selecting interviewing dates next year. Do you have any extraordinary EC's to make up for your average stats? Just about every applicant has clinical/nonclinical volunteering/research.

I would add a few more schools just to be safe. I'm also a CA resident, my GPA was slightly lower than yours. I got put on preinterview hold at all the west coast schools I applied to except PNW, with no interview invites. I'm attending LMU-DCOM right now. There are a lot of CA residents in my class.

Patience is a virute, the need for instant gratification is not.

My own school is probably going to get > 6000 apps this year. The CA schools, being popular will probably get even more than that.

Hence, all the Admissions deans to work their way through the pile down to you app. It's a long cycle, and you mightvery well get an II in Feb/Mar!

it's not too late to add more schools to the list.

thank you all so much for your response.
I will definitely be adding some more schools on my list in the next couple of days, and I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

It might be helpful to explicitly mention if you are applying only DO (which it seems like you are). Letting them know you aren't one that may waste an offer by choosing an MD acceptance later really helps.

Add more schools...that list is a little slim for as competitive as things have been the last couple of years.

You need more "mid-tier" schools, your list is slightly top heavy. I would say you will start hearing from some more in the next month. It is usually after a 3 month period when the chances of a silent reject are more prevalent. There are people who do get invites after 4 months, but not more than 1-2.

In my humble opinion, there does not seem to be anything to make you stand out from a very large crowd. Your rather run of the mill stats combined with your short list of schools is probably why you find yourself in this position.

Your app is too narrow for your stats- Sure, you've got a retake, but your sGPA is fairly low, and you had a 25 in the past. Keep in mind that DO schools tend to each have a certain "type" of student they take. DMU loves rural and primary care, the Touros tend to love high stats and people, ATSU loves primary care and "holistic" types, MSU loves people with tons of volunteering and great ECs and cares less about stats, etc etc. Your app might just not fit their profile, which is why you should be a bit more broad with DO apps than MD apps, which are generally less focused. LECOM-B also loves stats early on in the cycle, but once they milk the high stat people for their deposits, their standards tend to drop a bit.
