I have a friend who ended up not matching. They interviewed at great programs and got excellent feedback, but likely decided to go on too few interviews apparently ended up right below the cut-off. the SOAP didn't work out due to what appears to be the "being too academic" situation, as they have a PhD. As someone who remains interested in research, and will aim to reapply to research track and normal residencies in the future, what are their options at the moment? Are there 1 year fellowships available to people with MD (who also have a PhD)? Any advice would be great.

Do not graduate. Best to apply as a graduating senior next year. Build connections and apply to a very generous amount of programs.

Unfortunately I don't think that is an option for them, due to a combination of reasons.
