I was lucky enough to receive an offer from them but I'm not sure I can afford this school...its one of the most expensive for OOS tuition right? I believe a calculation was done in an earlier thread that tuition and fees (without books) alone is well over 300k. Plus my parents called a relator in minnieapolis and they say parking is so expensive that it could cost as much as rent. Should I just accept their offer until other schools give me an offer or just decline it because I will likely re-apply if I don't get any other offers.

I'm an undergrad at Minnesota. Parking can be expensive if you live in a luxury building or something, but most places nearby it's not nearly that bad... Most of my friends who have cars pay 60-80 a month for underground or about 30 for an uncovered spot somewhere. As far as parking at the school, I think professional students pay the same $500 a semester as undergrads for contract parking. But you could always bus in or take the light rail once that's up and running. As far as rent goes, if you live further out and commute in it's not too bad. Most of the stuff near campus is insanely overpriced, but the TC themselves are affordable.

Don't get me wrong, the dental school tuition is extremely expensive. I actually didn't apply here because of the cost. Just contributing what I know about the area in case it helps you make a decision.

Do you not want to attend Minnesota because it is too expensive, or because you don't really want to go to dental school in/at Minnesota? Dental school is going to be expensive everywhere you go, and most schools will do a great job accommodating students with financial aid, which doesn't only cover the cost of tuition, but also covers living expenses, food, spending money, etc. School financial aid changes depending on where you go. For example, the living costs in San Francisco are much higher than in Seattle, and because of this UCSF gives $22,000 a year for living expenses each year compared to $13,000 at UW. So if finances are really an issue, there are many ways to work around it. You can even look into the military scholarships, they are another great opportunity to help aid the cost of dental school.

If you don't plan on going to Minnesota because you don't want to attend the school, I think it would be really noble of you to let them know as soon as possible and potentially open up a spot for another student who really wants to attend. Good luck to you, I hope some of this information helps. If you need anymore info feel free to shoot me a PM.

did you check if minnesota allows you to change your residency?

It does not, at least it's extremely difficult and very rare. I knew I couldn't afford Minnesota despite really liking the school. I was very concerned with future increases too. Good luck with your tough choice.

300k is normal bro. USC and NYU are like 400k

He/she was talking about just tuition and fees...if NYUs website is right, their tuition and fees are slightly less than 300k. Granted, cost of living would be way higher in NYC.

But when we take out loans for our education, do we take them out just for the tuition portion or for EVERYTHING?

Everything. Most likely at 7.9% using the GRAD PLUS loan. So that beer you want your first year is $4.00 x 7.9% x 4 years = $5.42.

Minnesota is $370k OOS, with an excepted increase in tuition. So, it's pretty close to USC and NYU...:-/

OP, this is actually why I turned down their interview. Too expensive for OOS, even though it is a great school :-/ However, think about how much money you would potentially save by going to dental school now, than waiting a year and spending more on applications. You'd essentially lose a year worth of income, too.

Yea, that might be the case. But I was just trying to point out that it is still pricey. And forget PBL, I would still pick Minnesota over USC because I think it is a far better school. I would have liked it EVEN MORE if it were cheaper :-/

I just received my acceptance packet and here is the up to date COA

Projected income for 2017

D1 IN STATE 56,467
D2 IN STATE 74,375
D3 IN STATE 76,170
D4 IN STATE 77,548

D1 OOS 82,157
D2 OOS 107,961
D3 OOS 111K
D4 OOS 113,875

*assume a 4% increase in 2013-2014 and 4% increase every year after.

whats bothering me is that 1st year for OOS the room and board, transportation, and etc is totaled 13k.... which is ridiculously low

One of the rare ways to change your residency in most states (not sure of Minnesota) is to marry a resident. Just giving you ideas.

I have never heard of this.. I don't believe it. It doesn't even really make sense. A lot of states don't allow you to ever get in-state tuition EVEN if you become a resident, buy a house, are married.. blah blah blah. The stipulation usually states "if you are in the state for the purposes of schooling, then you pay for OOS tuition." Some states will allow In-state after a year, but a lot will not.

If you're invited to the party, go.
