I am trying to apply to medical school this year. A couple events in my life triggered this urge to study medicine.

After some recalculation I have the following GPAs. Unfortunately I dont think my chances are good for med school. I'd appreciate any advice.

27 years old TEXAS resident (but have strong ties to Arkansas)

Schools of interest:
  • all texas allopathic schools
  • TCOM
  • and any other allopathic school

2 years in finance/accounting with hedge fund internship and internship with Bank of China

  • BS microbiology 2004 with Asian Studies minor
  • MS genetics 2006 (Top 20 US Grad Program)
  • MBA international business 2007

- creator of social networking website to provide free advertising for local startup musicians and artists 2007-2009
- 200 hours of volunteer tutoring 2007-2009
- 2-3 years of lab research experience with 2 publications 2003-2006
- job shadowing with MD pathologist, DO, and anesthesiologist 2009
- 8months at radiology clerk 2003-2004
- 200 hrs of volunteer work 2003-2004
- studied intensive Chinese, Chinese history, econ, and politics in China for 1 year

AMCAS:
cUGPA: 3.67
BCPM: 3.56

MS GPA: 2.93**
MBA GPA: 3.67
cGGPA:3.41

TMDSAS:
c(U+G)GPA:3.54***
science(U+G)GPA:3.45***

4/2005 MCAT 27
will retake in 7/17/2007 and confident (based on practice tests so far) of 31-33.

**During my masters, I switched from neuroscience to genetics, after taking neuroscience, performing badly, and ended up with a C.

***My GPA is really hurt from the combination of the undergrad and grad GPA's.

Concerns:

-Will the timing of my second MCAT hurt me for Texas schools? other schools?
-Can I get ANY TX interviews with my current stats BEFORE my MCAT is updated?
-Do TEXAS schools look at the cumulative undergrad and grad?
-How much will my horrible MS GPA kill my chances MD and/or DO?
-What else can I possibly do to increase my chances???

I am mostly interested in Texas allopathic schools and possibly UAMS. I shy away from most DO other than TCOM.

Maybe. You can apply now and indicate that you're taking it again, but if a 28 is too low for a school they won't look at you until you get your new score.
-Can I get ANY TX interviews with my current stats BEFORE my MCAT is updated?
I don't know, someone else can answer this better. Probably the DO school, maybe Tech, A&M, Galveston.
-Do TEXAS schools look at the cumulative undergrad and grad?
-How much will my horrible MS GPA kill my chances MD and/or DO?
It probably is not going to look good. I would expect some questions about it for sure.
-What else can I possibly do to increase my chances???

Frankly, yes. Your application isn't very strong, and being complete that late is only going to hurt you more. If I'm not mistaken, your 2005 MCAT score will have already expired, so they won't look at your application at all until you get your score in mid-August. At the very least, make sure that you submit as soon as possible so you can get your verification out of the way.

-Can I get ANY TX interviews with my current stats BEFORE my MCAT is updated?

Again, I'm not sure, but I think your score has expired. If I'm wrong, you could get a look from Tech, A&M, and maybe UTHSCSA (UTHSCSA often seems to be interested in non-trads who may not have the highest stats but have a lot of clinical experience).

-Do TEXAS schools look at the cumulative undergrad and grad?
-How much will my horrible MS GPA kill my chances MD and/or DO?

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how Texas schools look at grad vs. undergrad grades; I know that the common thoughts are that the AMCAS schools place more emphasis on the undergrad grades, but that's because MS programs often have a lot of grade inflation. Therefore, it's really going to look weird that you have such a respectable undergrad GPA but such a bad MS GPA; you'll definitely get questions about it at the schools where it doesn't kill you outright.

If you haven't already submitted, do it ASAP. Other than that, it's pretty late in the day to be doing anything to improve your chances; your MCAT is going to be a huge determinant in what your chances are, as your ECs are fairly strong. Go ahead and focus mostly on the Texas allo schools and TCOM this year, but if you're unsuccessful, I strongly recommend looking further into some of the other DO schools.
