Hey guys. I am an incoming freshman and I recently had my orientation. I signed up for classes and i was put into chem/math and 3 electives (psych/astronomy/ and some bullish 1 credit required thing).

anyways i realized i was not signed up for a bio course and several people around me at registration who were premed were perfectly fine with not taking a bio course first year.

I believe I am lacking some type of knowledge or something and feel embarrassed to ask any one else so i am coming here. Should I be taking a bio course my first year?

also what electives would you guys recommend i take for the next 2 years which could help prepare me for the MCAT? I was googling and found this forum and have understood that some form of physiology/genetics can help a lot. Can i get more solid opinions on this?

I am sorry for my english. Not a native.

I didn't take Bio my first year. I am taking it my sophomore year and one semester of jr year. I am only taking it for the pre-req and MCAT knowledge though since I am an EE major. What's your major?

Kinda depends on your major, but if you are in the life sciences I would definitely try to get both Gen Bio and Gen Chem out of the way first as they are most common prereqs for upper level courses.

If your major is engineering I would take Chem and Physics for the same sort of logic. Other than that I can't help much with a little bit more info.

If bio is your major then you should obviously take it (maybe instead of anatomy?). If you're majoring in something else just make sure to take it and the other prereqs before the MCAT. Physiology and maybe micro would help before the MCAT.

No, you don't have to take bio right away, but you should still try to plan out your schedule a little. My mistake was that the only pre-med class I took freshmen year was Chem 1 in the spring. Because of how the courses were offered I was then forced to alternate Chem into bio each following semester (As I was trying to avoid chem and bio at the same time) so there was little continuity. It wasn't a huge deal, but it definitely pays off to plan out your schedule for the next few semesters, especially if you are not pursuing a major that overlaps with lots of pre-med areas.

thanks everyone. i plan on taking an easy bio course though so i can have some basic knowledge. I have almost no knowledge besides sat2bio stuff and never took ap bio.

as of now i have no major. i want to get a feel for the whole college atmosphere before i decide on a major. Things that i have been reading about/ interest me for a major are health sciences, chem engineering and business.

It really isn't a big deal. In my school, you can't take bio because Chem 1 and 2 are pre-reqs for it. I guess it's to weed out some people, that will ultimately struggle in the long run with the more difficult courses. Bio 1 and 2 were definitely harder than Chem 1 and 2 in my opinion.

My school's bio program didn't have bio 1st year either. I did math, chem, and physics my freshman year. Sophomore was bio and ochem.
