Did the lady here actually suggest to not enter medical school with credit card debt (as the loans should not be used to help pay off cc's)?? I mean I understand that part, loans are for your tuition and living expenses, not to pay off cc's. But come on, to suggest that it's you need to make those costs "disappear" by the time you enter medical school is absurd. We've seen the costs anywhere from $5k-$10 depending on the number of schools you send and # of secondaries you submit, plus if you're lucky enough to interview at many schools.

I currently don't even have a job right now, but plan on finding one. Will I by the time I hit med school? Who knows in this economy...

I live with them! Though I have some money saved up for application costs. So either way it's a bleh situation. Not paying rent/food, but funding app costs myself. Or like you, financially independent but gotta find $$ for them apps

I'm going to be funding secondaries and interview costs with credit cards, but I will have the balances paid off before I matriculate. My parents are unable (and unwilling) to help me financially and CCs are my only option.

I had to put about 4k on credit cards for my app/interview season. I've just budgeted payments into my medical school budget and I'll be paid off in a year 🙂

It's doable you just have to account for those payments in med school as part of your budget. Always pay off whatever has the highest interest rates first.

When I applied, I spent around 10k while applying to 80 us med schools. I got into one. So I figure it was worth it. My parents paid for this so I didn't have to accumulate credit card debt.

Wow. What was lacking in your app that called for 80 schools?

Well I have 10k saved up, so I plan to burn most of that... It's just that I am lucky to be able to live w/ my parents so rent/food isn't too big of an issue, plus I don't own a car currently. However, I know this would be much tougher if I had to work and pay for rent/food etc. And then still budget in med school apps?
