I have a dilemma right now that I was hoping others could shed some advice on.

I graduated from fellowship and am living in an area with a very tight job market (because of spouses job). I am contemplating working (part-time) as a hospitalist, etc for the next few years until I can figure out if my husband can move or perhaps if job market will change in my area. I am nervous however that this will be professional suicide. Have others heard of people doing this?

I also have a little kid and would like to have more flexibility to spend time at home which working as a per diem hospitalist would provide. I have been so focused on working the past few years that I have had very little time/control over spending time with my family. I just dont know again if this is going to be majorly detrimental to being able to be hired in the future in my subspecialty. What do others think?

Any insight/thoughts would be helpful.

Common for nephrologists who cant find a decent job to work as a hospitalist. Job market/jobs for nephro guys seem brutal these days.

Are you a nephrologist? I am one, but will be doing additional fellowship training in the non-renal track. I like nephrology but hate being a nephrologist (primarily because of the work situation). Please PM me if you would like to hear more of my story.

And for any ASN leaders or renal program directors reading this, please know I do plan on practicing nephrology part time. I just plan to limit my ESRD patient base to as little as humanly possible.

It matterss for academics but as long as you are be/bc and maintain any relevant procedural competence I can't imagine it being a problem otherwise.

Just saw your other post that implies you are cardiology. Yes, that would be unusual to work general IM as cards.

Whats the problem with finding a job? You might be able to find some kind of inpatient/"cards hospitalist" kind of gig.
