Note taking

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Having someone near you in class typing on a laptop is extremely annoying and distracting. Having many people doing this simultaneously is intolerable. For the sake of others, pen and notebook is the most considerate thing, and probably the most efficient, if done skillfully. Were I teaching a course, I would want to prohibit laptops in class. A major reason for this is that students using the internet and email in class (happens frequently) is counter to the educational goals of the course, and disrespectful to the professor and other students.

I'm very much an abstract thinker and visual learner, so taking notes with a pen and paper keeps me more focused. This way, I can draw graphs and display relationships/themes through other visuals when needed (nothing crazy, but the occasional pyramid or Venn diagram is incredibly helpful to me). I know you can do all of that with a computer, but I would take so much time in the tools section of Word that I would miss what was being said!

I just googled the Pulse Smart Pen, xscpx, and it looks amazing! If I didn't lose writing utensils like it was my job, I would definitely get one of those.

I prefer paper and pen, definitely. In my MPH classes, 100% of those who used laptops for note taking were also checking e-mails, and doing instant messaging for the whole period.

The way you're stating it seems like you're trying to draw a causal relationship of some sort between 'Not Using Paper and Pen' and 'Distractive Behaviors' >:[

I normally do both depending on classes. With Econ/Math classes in undergrad, I would type notes and use paper for graphs/equations, whereas in other classes that only involved generic note-taking, it'd be typing all the way.

Pen and paper. My laptop is too heavy for me to lug around and I know I would get distracted by the internet.

rofl @ espre... been spending time in the 60's much? it's not the typing, it's your closed-mindedness towards other students that's intolerable here... good thing you aren't teaching a course, cause in 2010 no one would take it... I can't believe that in 2010 we still have such luddites...

as far as the actual answer to this... most of the time I type... it's just way more practical as it allows you to organize your notes better afterwards, print them, share them, and just generally edit them to be more useful, it saves trees and I do have access to email and such in class when sometimes you NEED to get some e-mail urgently... all the things you can do on a computer these days just makes it so incredibly useful... the problem is... I'm starting classes in the fall and they will all be 3 hours long and I'm pretty sure my battery does not last that long... I'm gonna have to think something up... maybe I'll get a netbook, but those things are so slow... but they last I guess... I hate dealing with crappy technology... it's like driving a Ford lol...
