Notetaking in Pharmacy School

For any current pharmacy students, do you guys type up notes / record lectures?

Are most classes in pharmacy school slide-based ( print outs ) or your own note-taking? Would a tablet laptop be beneficial?

I started using OneNote in undergrad, and it has helped me organize all my notes. Would OneNote help with note-taking in pharmacy school?

Well, for example in my physiology class, the professor posts up the lecture slides on BlackBoard a few days before the lecture. We print it out in 3 slide/page form (with the empty lines next to each slide to write down notes).

What I like to do is open up the slides in Powerpoint while in lecture, and type in any additional notes into the "additional notes" section of Powerpoint.

After class, I'll print out the slides and write in the additional notes, and then review the whole thing on the train ride home.

I've noticed a few classmates using OneNote in class. I would use it if I knew about it earlier, but since I'm kinda obsessive-compulsive about everything in my computer being in order and in the same file format, I'm not going to use it until next semester.

OneNote is this program that comes with Microsoft Office 2007.

This is a true notebook program. So you open up the main file. That file is basically whatever is needed for all your classes that semester.

Inside that are tabs that you can set-up for different classes.

You can go to each separate tab and make separate pages for different days of the lecture.

So now, your professor uploads some notes. Just copy and paste all those notes onto the main section of that classes page.

As you are going along in lecture, you can add in any notes/comment along side.

It's hard to explain but its a really fascinating tool.

Yep, it's great for notes

You can import powerpoint / pdf slides , which become embedded on each notebook. Over each of these slides (anywhere), you can type up any notes/draw diagrams/insert pictures/etc. I think there is also a function that lets you sync your note-taking with the recording you have done while taking those notes

omg that sounds amazing, can't believe I've never heard of it before! Can I only get it with Office 2007?? Or is it sold separately?

My mom is a professor at Westwood College and gave me the free Microsoft Office pack.

I have never used the onenotes before but I just found the right thing I needed and will save paper. It is in the office pack but I have never heard if they sell them in singles. Check at your bookstore for student discounted ones.

I'm currently @ ACPHS. They require you to buy their tablet pc as do some schools I hear. I like to use journal note writer as oppose to onenote. The good thing about onenote is that everything saves as oppose to journal note writer.

There is a 2003 version of onenote, currently have it on my laptop. (brought my laptop freshmen year... 2006)

When I take notes in classes like pathophysiology, pharmaceutics, biochem, immuno, and lab... I usually have a recorder in front of the teacher and my tablet out. I take notes using my tablet... and then @ nite transfer it over to hard copy... while listening to the lecture again to see if I miss anything.

***I don't like taking notes on my laptop but it does prevent wasteful use of paper and reinforcement. Also its alot lighter than carrying 4 different notebooks.

I've just kept the same habits from undergrad. For the most part, all our lectures are put online as PowerPoints or PDFs. I print them out and write notes on them. I don't record any of the lectures because I know it wouldn't be useful for me. I have seen fellow students using tablet PCs and OneNote. Really you can do anything you think will help you learn and stay organized.

I'm sure the mods wouldn't like you promoting a website to illegally download software on SDN.

As for this topic, I know that I would never use a tablet PC to take notes (although saving paper) because it is difficult to write legibly on the tablet screen (at least for me). I love the "3 slides per page with the lines next to it" format as you get to see what the teacher wanted to get across and what you got from it parallel to each other.

Am I old fashioned? I still use notebooks for some classes, and actually write my own notes down in them.

Well, my handwriting is pretty bad, I don't understand my own handwriting at times.

My school pretty much demands we use OneNote - we all got the same tablet computer. You don't have to use it but you're paying for it regardless.
