I would like to get a jump on my equipment purchase by shopping around early. What equipment is required/suggested for 1st years at NOVA?

For first semester
Retinoscope
Opthalmoscope
Lens case (don't know what they call it exactly except for Lens Suitcase 😀 ) looking at about 2,000 dollars. I wouldn't buy anything on the internet though, but I would just look for fun.
When you get to nova you will have an afternoon that they will set up for you and there will be lots of 2nd 3rd and 4th year students and doctors to help you and give you their opinion. Brand names:
Keeler
Welch Allen
I have a Heine (I do like Welch Allen though but you will be able to see them all in that afternoon and hold them so you have to choose what feels good to you).

Good Luck
Aida 🙂

Thanks Aida for the good advice... do you remember if we need to come up with the 2k cash or can they tack that on to loans if we are funding our education that way? Also does this happen first semester?

It is the loan money that you have to spend for all this equipment. Yes that happens the first semester, earlier on because you need to use the retinoscope very early in the semester. The second semester you have to buy the bio kit which costs about 2000 dollars (again from the loan money) but you don't use that equipment till the first semester of second year.

what is an ophthalmoscope?
You can check the health of the inside of the eye with it, like a telescope (tele = far, scope = something to do with seeing) 🙂 but called an ophthalmoscope (ophthalmo = eye, eyeball). You get to see the blood vessels the optic disc, many things with it, it is fun. 🙂
