Nova and specializing

I know it's early to be discussing specializing if I haven't even started Dental School yet............... But I will. Is Nova looked upon as a good school to be coming from when applying to specialty programs? Or are all schools in the same boat and it all depends on individual achievments? Lastly do NSU specialty programs cater more to Nova graduates or is it entirely seperate? Thanks to all eventual posts for the input!

i'm also nova class of 2013 so congratz first of all! 🙂
i actually have a same question about NOVA but what i researched for was the possibility of specializing not only at nova but at school of different states as well. so far about 10~15 ppl told me that all schools are basically on the same boat since what you need is high gpa, good board score, and good recommendations.. plus some research + externship experience..
but what i remember from the interview is that student at nova arent much involved in reasearch and i was wondering of the research opportunities i would have from nova..

when i emailed dr. lippman and other current students about research; he told me that nova isn't really big on research but they do have positions for students that do want toparticipate in with the faculty. dr. lippman told me that if you are in good academic standing (after 1st semester or year... forgot which one) you are able to apply for one. hope this helps

With undergrad I assumed that Dental schools wouldn't differentiate that much so long the gpa and Dat scores were on par..... maybe they require a bit of a higher gpa if coming from not such a well known or respected undergrad institution. However, there are over 50 dental schools so I guess I wasn't that concerned. I was curious to know if getting into a specialty program is as competitive as it sounds maybe this is a way for specialty programs to eliminate candidates? I'm not saying it is or isn't I'm just curious to know.

Yes, they probably were. This is the reason the DAT exists.

I think that Nova is a great school to go to if you intend on specializing...When I was there, competition for specialty positions was not really that fierce, and most people were more than willing to help one another even if they wanted to specialize. Most of our instructors treated us very fairly and did not create unwarranted tension--I actually enjoyed my time there when I look back on it. The whole attitude at the school is much more relaxed in my opinion in comparison to other schools from what I have seen and heard. The PEOPLE in south Florida are a little superficial in my opinion, which sucks, but the educational experience was good. I am a first year resident in orthodontics at another school now, and I see quite a difference in the general competiveness between students and the condescending nature of many of the faculty that exists at my new school (along with a lot of other BS that I won't get into). You would do yourself A FAVOR by going to Nova.

So I take it that nova is a fine place to go and that specializing, so long one meets the expected requirements, is a posssible option.
