Nova Denied

I think the reason's much simpler. I think one of them - "them" - managed to get a spot in the admissions committee. Now that they're in, they're looking out for "their kind."

...I'll also acknowledge that they can justify looking out for their kind with reasons like..."well, we feel that these candidates have a strong sense of blah, blah...", or "these applicants are much needed in the dental world, so we feel like we should re-populate the dental world with mormons..."

its just crazy how so many get in every year, when i come from a state w/o a dental shcool as well but very few kids get in. i bet the money from your church or temple plays a huge factor, behind the scenes.

I think that you two are a bit off. Just my opinion. Lets not be bitter, just better.

not bitter at all just wanted to gain some knowledge, you know?

if you think about it, probably someone with a similar experience is a different organization like Peace Corps or something will get similar treatment. the nature of one's voluntary experiences can say alot about an individual.

I hear ya. There may be some good ol boy networking going on, but not more than for any other sect or group. Our church is very strict about moral obligations, they would never donate to any dental school with the intent of getting mormons in at that school with lobbying etc. Hell, they are one of the richest organizations in the US and if they were worried about the 500-1000 applicants they would build their own school in Provo.

There must be something about us that is intangible, I can't directly answer the question.

are the missions they go on voluntary?

Voluntary and about 10,000 bucks.

Well, I'm not mormon. That's obvious. My stats are also among the very top in the country, but I won't say what they are(not until I get accepted, at least). My undergrad is on par with Duke and Cornell, but I won't say which school I went to yet. My service to the community is no less than the very top. The difference is... my service was to my OWN community. I didn't leave the country to do that service. Somehow, that's not as good.

and I hate to make blanket statements and gross categorizations of "mormons," like they're all the same. I just can't account for all the individualities on some random bulletin board. So I apologize for those who may take offense to these categorizations.

and as a 19 year old you have to wear a dress shirt and tie/ suit and you can't spend time with the ladies or play video games or watch tv or go home to see your family or anything fun.

i feel you studentdentist

a big part of it is that utah has no d-school and there are TONS of predents here, in 05 (the latest year I have #'s for), there were around 300 predents at BYU alone, plus UVSC, UofU, Utah State. The total would probably be around 5 or 6 hundred from Utah.

And no, there is no mormon conspiracy behind the scenes (that we're telling you about here anyway  )

My service was in the US, so is that my own community?

I think the reason you got denied from Nova wasn't because you aren't mormon, is that what you are implying? I am confused.

what the ministry of the church does or refuses to do.... doesn't command what a mormon adcom would do.

is the state of utah over populated with dentists?

I'm not connecting my denial with religious affiliation. I got denied because they're out of interview spots. The religious thing is a different topic. Someone else brought it up. I never even realized Nova liked mormons.

but i think the possibility of a whole adcom board being taken over by mormons is not likely. at least not any more likely than an adcom board being taken over by catholics, protestants, jews, etc.

Someone said something about a temple donating money, and that is why mormons get in. That is way off.

and the truth of that statement, we'll never know. it's all speculation here on.

I hear ya, I don't think there were more than 3 mormons that got in last year. And one was from AZ.

And yes there are jit loads of dentists here.

I was referring to the example you gave. You gave an example to illustrate, in some way or form, a stance that was beneficial to you. I simply pointed to the error in reasoning.

And considering that I was commenting your stance, your last statement was discrediting your very own, original stance.

okay, I am lost. Have a good day guys and gals. Good Luck
