i thought i tell those of you waiting on NOVA what they told us at interviews last week. they said that they have received something like 2,700 applications this year and have only gone through half of them. they have invited 300 people to interview. last year they interviewed 370 people total, but this year they are not sure how many they will ultimately interview. if they haven't contacted you yet then give it some time cuz they've got a lot of applications to go through! good luck to everyone!

Thanks for the info! Did they mention about whether they'll try to fill the class before Dec 1??

I was told they would have the class about half full by the time I interview, Jan 10th.

They attempt to fill the class on Dec. 1 according to Dr. Lippman 🙂

holy ****, that is unbelievable!!! do you all think that there are THAT many more people applying this year, that many more people applying early, or more people applying to more schools than in the past??!!! :scared:

btw, how many people were there interviewing with you?

9, half of them were mormons

any updates on being able to call and find out if they can give an unofficial decision?

I am calling next week for sure, Ill keep y'all posted.

i interviewed with 6 total and 4 were mormons. i asked about when we might could find out about whether we got accepted or not and they said that a decision would be made in two weeks and then they would mail out letters over thanksgiving. they didn't mention anything about early phone calls or anything.

Thanks man. Hard work pays off.

After visiting Ohio State, I think they are pretty high on my list.
Nova was sweet. We are concerned about evacuating and hurricanes and all that though.
ASDOH dropped way off my list after interviewing there, infact I withdrew.
Case has really been the most impressive thus far!
UNLV Marquette and Buffalo are good schools also.

We'll see come Dec :luck:

wow, so much to think about. Why is Case so selective this year? It seems like by the time they get done picking their class, their avg stats will be in 20s this year.

They are a private school, they don't have any funding issues with the state of Ohio, so they aren't required to take the Ohio kids who will bring the avg down.
And with over 16000+ applicants this year (aadsas) and 3500+ (case), and new facilities and equipment, they can be selective as they want.

The best part about case is that you have a your own op and a secretary. You just practice dentistry. No phone calling or billing or fighting for a chair.

are you at all concerned about their board passage rates with this new full blown PBL program? from what someone else posted on here it seems that the first class that has gone through this full PBL program will not take part I of the boards until the end of the summer. i am a little worried about that part seeing as we're talking about paying a lot of $$$$$$ and then to go through what it appears USC went through after adopting the program initially is a little scary.

it looks like case has been gradually moving over to the full-blown version, but i guess i still have some concerns. did they talk to you about any of that at your interview? mine is coming up and i definitely have some questions about that!!!

What you need to remember is that the boards are problem based also, so you will be prepared to pass!
My buddy is a D1 there now and he loves it. Bringing up if the programs cirriculum is questionable in an interview isn't good karma, ask students how they like it. I bet none of them miss gross anatomy and biochem lectures and tests!

i wish i did know someone who was in school at case western but i don't 🙁 , i agree that it is VERY attractive to not sit through boring lectures and learn material for the sake of regurgitation, but i also want to do well on the boards. so, just to clarify, the people you know at case who are in this full blown PBL program feel they are being well prepared for the boards??!!

sorry to be so naive 😳 , but i think we can all agree that this is a huge investment of time and money and we all want to make sure we make informed decisions. i feel uncomfortable asking about this in an interview situation, but seeing as i don't know anyone at the school, that makes it difficult to glean this information. thanks!!!

p.s. to the OP- sorry for hijacking this thread 😳

I have actually tried calling twice (the last two bus. days) since I last updated this thread. The first time I got directed by my last name to a voice mail. The second time I was directed by name to a live person, told her what I understood to be true and she directed me to another adcom member and then I got voicemail.

I plan on calling that second person directly tomorrow. Hopefully she answers. I feel kind of dumb asking but I know that was said to applicants so I am going to do it.

who was the person they connected you too? I have been trying to get through, but have only gotten an answering machine. It is very frustrating.

You're talking about Su-Ann Zarrett...well i first just called the general admissions office, and they directed me to the dental school, and the lady asked for the first letter of my last name and directed me to Akeena Pereira. I then continued to call Akeena's direct line and finally got a hold of her and asked her. I'm not sure if I ever spoke w/ Su-Ann, but she's the one that sent our interview letters.

Thanks for the valuable info, I will call at the end of next week then.

Hi,

I received an invitation letter from NOVA today scheduled on 10/27.

Maybe there was a sudden empty seat available?

Thanks!

I received one probably about a month ago and was booked for Feb. 9. So we're in the same boat. When I called I asked and was told I would receive just as much consideration as the earlier applicants. So it's all good🙂

The only problem is there are less seats to offer and so you are competing at a whole new level. But your right I'm sure they give you a good look.

Yes and no. If there are 80 spots they fill before the end of the year, and interview 240 people for them, then 20 spots left that they interview another 60 people for it really is the same sampling of individuals that you are "competing" with. But, I understand your point. I just prefer to be optomistic🙂

Well, I agree kinid of. I guess there are other factors that play into getting accepted at that point too. For example, say you are a Utah applicant and they have already offered 10 seats to Utah applicants, then the chances of them offering you a seat is way down. They want diversity in the class and that prety much goes with any group represented, i.e. instate, out-of state, female etc. A whole lot more factors are involved is what I believe. Good luck though! I guess I might be a little more pesimistic because of my experience with Feb, March and April interview dates.

Ha ha...understood. I don't even know why we try to figure it out🙂

Same thing with me! Wow... 10/27 lucky! There must have been a cancelation. I got an interview Jan 5th... the waiting is killer.

How do you get Nova's secondary? i submitted all my materials months ago and haven't heard anything about a complete application. got an email saying my LOR's were received but thats all...should i just call them and see whats up?

I will call this friday, and keep yall posted!

from what you have heard, are you expecting to get an unofficial "yes"/"no" or to just be told that your app. was not put in the 'no longer being considered' pile?

I am expecting a version of yes/no, like a major hint or start looking for houses etc. Not just a bland statement that tells me nothing.
