I'm going to Nova for dental school this fall and have a few questions about taking out loans or accepting the HPSP scholarship I've been in the process of applying for since December. Can anyone tell me the absolute truth about the loan program? I don't want to have a ton of debt and be unable to buy a house or car, but I also don't really like the idea of giving up everything for the military. Anyone? 🙂

whats the HPSP scholarship and how do you apply for it?

If that is the case, then you would most likely be better off NOT doing the military scholarship. I considered it for awhile, then after being told by a million people not to do it unless you were really "wooo military" I realized that I don't want to be controlled like that. I would rather use that 4 years or so to build my practice.

It will be hard for myself to get a practice or start one after incurring so much debt if I choose not to do the HPSP program. They cover everything and about 1200 a month. I would believe it be hard to get another loan for a practice after you are still paying back loans from school. For the person wondering about how you go about applying for one, just contact a recruiter...the military is in great need of dentists.

I met someone on a plane who was an Army dentist. She said if she could go back and do it again she would not. Her simple reasoning was that the Army now owned her and she was always being moved all over the place and since she was of such a low rank she was always getting crap from other officers. I mean I don't know if any of this out weighs the benefits, but it is something to consider.
