So initially the choice was easy. Nova b/c it is wayyyy cheaper. However I just got my acceptance package from NYU and was offered 20,000 a year which would bring the 4 years cost of attendance from around 400K to 320K. This is almost identical if not a bit cheaper than Nova...Now I'm completely confused with my decision😳

So keeping in mind that my cost of attendance would be the same, what do you all suggest?

That's a pretty big chunk of money, congrats! If you don't mind me asking, what were your stats?

I think you have to consider the cost of going to NYU does not only include the tuition.......the huge chunk of money also goes to high rent fee and living expenses ......!

but...my first choice is still nyu XD

congrats on the scholarship! I wish I got one T_T

Ohhh I know 🙂 I included the estimated 33K of living per year in my calculations. The tuition alone including supplies would be roughly 70K a year however the scholarship would reduce that to 50K. The living and estimated personal costs at 33K per year take that up to around 80K per year. Multiplying that by the 4 years gives me a rough estimate of 330K. Of course this is not taking into consideration any yearly increases in tuition or anything like that but it is just to give me a rough idea.

On the opposite side of the spectrum.....

Nova's tuition is roughly 54K per year and once supplies and such are added in it raises that total to 60-65K. Living and personal expenses are estimated at 21K raising the yearly cost of attendance to an estimated 85 or so. Times the four years of attendance and again around 320-340K.

I honestly feel that I could cut down on the estimated living expenses at both schools. The NYU cost is estimating 2100 a month. My uncle is a real estate agent in NY and he tells me that I could find something for around 1500/month a little outside of Manhattan but still within 15 minutes of the school on the train.

If I manage my money correctly and find a decent place at around that estimated 1500/month I estimated that I could attend NYU for a tad under 300K for the 4 years assuming tuition stays relatively around what it is now.

If these numbers seem incorrect to anyone please call me out. I'm not looking to convince myself into thinking that NYU is equivalent to Nova in pricing but that is what I'm calculating it out to be.

Somebody just did a estimated cost layout with the schools they are trying to decide between so I thought I would copy them to see if I get some better feedback 🙂

NYU
FOUR YEARS
Variable cost: Tuition, Instruments, Books = 268,527 - 80,000 (scholarship) = 188,527
Variable cost: Housing = 1500*12*4 = 72,000
Variable cost: Food, Metro, Misc = 400*12*4 = 19,200 (may be living w/gf who might also attend NYU so she could contribute to food costs and such)
Total cost = 279,727

Nova
FOUR YEARS
Variable cost: Tuition, Instruments, Books = 248,475
Variable cost: Housing = 1000*12*4 = 48,000
ariable cost: Food, Gas, Misc = 400*12*4 = 19,200
Total cost = 315,675

These are my most precise estimates. So what do you all think?

I liked both schools. If costs are going to be not that different, then I guess you only need to worry about what school you like XD

if you want to read it, these are what I liked/didn't like about each school

NOVA
Pro
1. I liked the idea of having all health profession students in one building because you have chance for much diverse social network!
2. The campus looked amazing! ...and their gym..(drool)
3. I liked the fact you get your own chair (I think it was 2 people per chair?, correct me if im wrong)
4. Family-like atmosphere....people knew each other very well, and they were like big family...the class size is small so there's only one group each year and you go to same classes, take same exams, and have exact same schedule for next 4 years....
5. Students seemed very satisfied with their life there...they looked very cheerful and happy 😀

CON
1. I don't like heat..I hate heat-_-;..and..NOVA's in Florida..so...

NYU
1. I actually like big classes..more social network, and diversity...
2. I've always lived in big cities, I love fashion, ART, living in big busy busy cities so living in NYC is very exciting for me 😀
3. This may not apply to you: It's most well-known, highly respected school among Koreans....I am Korean and when I open my clinic, Korean community is going to be my major marketing target whether I plan it or not. And in this community, social network and name-value is very important (some people may not get this)..Also, I might go back to Korea, and I can't ignore this factor.

CON
1. Students didn't look that cheerful and happy...I mean..compared to NOVA..(but I am not saying this is due to school quality 😛)
2. It seemed they share everything...chair, tools(NOVA you purchase your own I believe), etc
3. you get to compete with international dentists (who already had been practicing or graduated in their home country) in same class...😛

I left out points on school facility, and curriculum because I think they are both very awesome and it would be endless and pointless to debate which one is better..

So, NYU would only cost me $188,527 because my home is 20 minutes away. That just made my decision much tougher. 🙁

Remember this is a rough estimation so don't hold me to that number. If you do decide to go elsewhere though ask your parents if they would like to adopt another student for 4 years. 😀
I'll take your room lol.

You can actually live in NYC for much cheaper. If you get roommates and be willing to live in a smaller space. You can live for as little as 1000/month if you really look. I know because I live in manhattan and that is how much my friend charges her roommate for rent.

haha my room is pink with a shabby chic feel. If you were a guy, I don't think it would be suitable to you.

Thanks for the numbers though. You brought NYU back into the running to be a potential dental school I may attend.

OP, congrats on the scholarship! Would you mind sharing your stats/whether there was a special aspect to your application/whether you know why you received the scholarship?

That's a pretty big chunk of money, congrats! If you don't mind me asking, what were your stats?

What are you stats? or anything special on your app to receive a scholarship?
Congrats btw!

Sure I have a 3.9 with a 21. Tons of ECs and strong letters of rec. I definitely feel the scholarship was a holistic evaluation.

Anyone else lol. One day I say NYU for sure and then the next day I'm thinking Nova.

Isnt nyu 70k per year... so thats 280k - 80k = 200k

Only 12k more than estimated..

Yea my bad I forgot to mention that my parents would continue to take care of my health insurance so I eliminated that from the cost of tuition. Still will NYU's yearly increases of 3-5% in tuition 200K would be a pretty accurate figure.
