Nova Southeastern students

I was granted an interview from Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine. I am from ohio but love the idea of going to dental school in flordia and possibly spending the rest of my life in this beautiful state! However what would happen if I went to nova southeastern but then decided I wanted to practice in the midwest? I take the fl boards right? Does that allow me to practice in other states ? thanks so much for your help

What happens with attending a school in a state other than where you attend school is that you will take the boards for Florida first. When you are done taking them you will need to then take the Midwest Regional boards which takes care of you for a collection of states in the midwest- it is a seperate examination!
The state of Florida takes its examination very seriously and basically will only give out licenses to those who have attended school here. Please do not waste our time by attending school, taking the boards, and not practicing here in Florida. If you enjoy the cold that much... ...STAY THERE!!!!!

firstly there is no such thing as the midwest regional boards. so this danhook character is a little off base, and seems psychologically unstable. my guess is he/she's applying to Nova and doesn't want the competition. i'm sure he'll be reincarnated here on SDN as a Nova student telling people not to go there!!!
to the original poster, you'll be fine. go to nova, you'll be eligible for each and every single regional board you care to take. so in your case, take the FL boards, and then either NERB or WREB and you'll be set for ohio, and a host of other states. that's the least of your concerns -- focus on getting in to the school of your choice. another thing to chew on: by the time you're in 4th yr of dental school there may be a unified board exam that'll cover you for the entire U.S.

I know a few people who went to school in a state other than Florida, and have taken and passed the Florida boards. Only one is currently practicing in Fl. They said it was not an easy process but it was possible!

Not true at all....
OP: go to the school that you think will best meet your needs and that you will be happy going to for the next 4 years. There is no such thing as the Midwest Regional boards...They DO NOT exist. Other than a few separate state licensing exams, most students today choose to take the WREB or the ADLEX. I am taking the NERB which falls under the ADLEX and the ADLEX covers over 40 states. The WREB also is accepted in many states (I'm not sure of the exact number). There is also talk of a single unified exam, but who knows when or if this will go through.

Ohio accepts both the ADLEX and the WREB. Note: You can also go to school in Ohio and take the Florida exam to practice there later...it is NOT TRUE that Florida only gives licenses to those who have attended school there. I think that the previous poster has some other motives or is greatly uninformed. Either way, don't believe his post.

It's very possible that there may be a national licencing exam by the time you graduate, so this might not be a concern. Everyone has been pushing for it over the past few years. Also, from what I've heard California and Florida are the most difficult to get licenced in, so other states/regions may not be as difficult. I'm a D-1 at Nova and I really like it. Good luck on your interview!

I wouldn't count on the national boards coming about so quickly as far as getting it in 2011. We can dream though...

and to reassert the same point. I know four dentists here in San Diego who graduated from California schools, currently practice in california, and also have licensure for Florida. More than a few dentists do it early in their career if they think they might not stay in one place their whole career.
