I'm a little confused about what I experienced at my recent NOVA interview (early Feb). WHAT DO YOU THINK.....????

After a really great interview with SuAnn, Dr. Bock, and Dr. Lippman, I left the conference room and was greeted by Fern. After a few pleasantries, She offered me a treat.

She instructed me to take a piece of candy out of her basket and to eat it. Then she offered a 2nd piece of candy to me and said it had a special suprise in it. She leaned over and in a hushed tone, said the candy contained an unofficial letter of acceptance. I was totally floored!! My jaw dropped and all I could blurt out was, "but how??"

Before I could get a clarficiation, we were interrupted by phone call after phone call. She finally said that if I didn't hear from them in 3 weeks to give her a call but in the meantime, start thinking about housing.

My questions are:

1) Since there was no way she could have communicated with the admin panel after my interview, How did she know what their verdict was?

2) For those who have interviewed at NOVA, has this happened to you as well? And if this has, did you get accepted?

3) Could this all have been a cruel cruel joke to elicit rollercoaster Highs and lows???

Whoa, that sounds like a good joke or so. I would call her and bug her and ask for my acceptance letter then.
I'm glad no body joked to me like that at all of my interviews.
That's no good, man

AD:

OK, I don't know how to break this to you, but Fern is only a secretary that greets the applicants. Her candy thing, she does that to everyone. She likes to talk about her "magic candy" from her nephew Benjamin and blah, blah, blah!

She know nothing about the final verdict of your application!

She means no harm nor is it a joke, it's simply her way of trying to calm you and keep you up beat!

Good luck in your application process.

Oh my goodness!

What you just shared might be the wierdest thing I have ever heard about any admission committee........makes me glad that I didn't apply to NOVA!.........................sheesh, screwin' with your head like that....what a tactless way to try and calm nerves!!!!

Hey Fern is cool.

Don't diss Fern.

All I have to say:

Beeeeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnjjjjjjjjjjjjiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!

I would definately call and complain and I wouldn't go to nova even if they offered you acceptance. Why would she say something like start looking for housing. What if you did.

Fort Lauderdale maybe nice = but there is something to be said about professionalism. Its like an anxious patient at the dentist and the assistant comes in jokingly and says so you are here today to get all your teeth pulled.

That secretary needs to learn her role!

By all means, Fern, the secretary, is not a part of the admissions committee of College Dental Medicine. She's simply a greeting secretary for the Health Professions Division that likes to act like she's a part of the admissions.

Please do not let Fern's actions or words be a reflection of what Nova dental is all about. Nova dental admissions personal does and will not mislead, misinform, nor joke with their applicants.

Applicants tend to take Fern too seriously which I strongly recommend them not to. Again, she means no harm, but has a weird way of doing her "greetings" and they tend to be overboard at times.

Sounds like the Health Professional Division needs a new greeting secretary. Who would want to be greeted like that? It's not even a professional way to greet anyone. And as of joking or calming, it's a weird kind of joke. A friend of mine is seriously thinking of moving to NOVA right now. He believes that his letter will come any day. Holy.....😡 😡

Well, I bet you got Fern's message wrong since she did not have a chance to finish her sentence. Basically she would go on to say that she hopes you will get accepted and once you did you get to have the candie, or something in those lines.

I think Fern's greeting is a memorable one and a greate ice-breaker.
I would prefer into walk to an admission office and have Fern greet me and have a laugh rather than walk into an office like USC with a couple of unfriendly people that would increase the already high tension level.

I agree Fern is a little eccentric, but you need to chill out.

What she said to me was "Pick a candy, and remember that Benji (her nephew in Atlanta) spread angel dust on it and he is rooting for you to get into NOVA. So when you go home eat it and you will get good luck and an acceptance to NOVA."

C'mon learn to take a little joke, and besides. If NOVA does interview you, you have a very very good chance of getting accepted. So even if Benji doesn't spread "angel dust" then still you would get in, she is just being a little nutty.

Florida weather does that to you. 😛

Sorry I have not spoke or met with fern during my interview. I know that from the four people I was with, Two of them had spoken with her previously about their status and they were really weirded out. Don't even consider your acceptance until you get the certified mail packet.

This has nothing to do with the topic right now, but I was wondering if anybody has received the webSTAR PIN. Did they also give you a nova.edu email too. Or do you set one up yourself. I was having problems setting up the email. It said that i was not formally admitted, but i was accepted already. thanks a bunch.

Hello All,

I truly like Fern and I had a short but great conversation with her before my interview. Her personality is charming and fun but I believe her post-interview comments were out of place and doesn't serve to help ease the stress of waiting for the decision. On the contrary, it raises the expectation to a level that may cause the susbsequent fall to be devistating.

If all that was said was "Benji sprinkled some magic dust on your candy and he is hoping for your acceptance to Nova", I would take it as a good luck comment. But to add "unofficial letter of acceptance" made me think otherwise. I know she only meant well but her timing sucked.

Regardless, I still am hoping for admissions into NOVA's program. I had a really great time visiting and talking with faculty and dental students. I couldn't help but notice the passion and enthusiam at this college.

My intent on posting my experience was to get another perspective on my interaction with Fern and to give other prospective candidates a "heads-up". Wish me luck!!

Back to Physiology studies!😱

I've had the same problem. I was accepted in January, but it still says that I have not been admitted to a program yet. Im assuming that we need to send in the second deposit and final transcripts for this to change.

I was able to log onto webstar, but I am unable to log on and fill out the authorization form for financial aid. (so i just printed it out and sent it via snail mail).

If you figure anything out let me know, thanks

Chewie,

I'm in the same boat.. i was accepted in january too. I faxed over the authorization form and filled out the entrance interview online. I think that may be the case, we need to turn in our second deposits and transcripts to be formally accepted. Have you started to look for a place to live yet.. Are you interested in living on or off campus...

calidenti-

I was planning on living off campus. I am actually looking into possibly buying a condo. With mortage rates so low right now the payments on a condo are not too much more than renting, but the downside to that is it would probably be further away from school. I contacted a realtor last week and they sent me a packet of info. on all the nearby areas. If worse comes to worse I might just have to rent an apt. for a while when i fist get there, but I know that I have to take another trip down to florida it is hard to know what areas are good when you live on the west coast.

I dont even know if there is oncampus housing?? What are your plans??

Hi all, I'm going to Nova, and I received my webstar pin. It hasn't been much use except to view my financial aid stuff and to update my address. I too am thinking of buying a condo, and am working with a realtor as well. I am planning a reconnaissance mission at the end of May to look for suitable barracks for me and the fam. I'm in the same boat as chewie pretty much: I want a low payment, and am willing to live a little ways away.

As far as Fern is concerned, I had a positive experience with her. I listened while she talked about Benji, and she is very nice. I believe she's only trying to set the interviewees at ease by offering them candy, and hoping (along with the applicant) that her sweets offer them some luck with their acceptance to the program. By no means is she trying to get your hopes up-like I'm sure they already are, after all you're being interviewed-and I'm sure she'd be sorry to hear that she upset somebody! Of course, she can't know if you will be admitted, but I witnessed as her acceptance candy changed into exam candy with all of the answers inside of it right before my eyes. In fact, it came out of the same basket. I can see how someone may take her too seriously, but she's really a student's and applicant's advocate.
