Hey everyone,

Just found out i got accepted to AZCOM which now makes my decision of which school to go to. I really felt great at both schools and can see myself going to both but i cant decide. I dont care for the high tuition at AZCOM or the high cost of living in fort lauderdale, what i care about is getting into a competitive residency outside of family practice or internal medicine.

Basically, I would like to know more about 3rd and 4th years since i think these are the most important.
-Such as how are the rotations different at this school
-How many electives do you have
-Pros and cons of 3rd and 4th yrs
-Anything?!?!?

Thanks everyone, i know these may be annoying but i really need your help!!!

If you're trying to talk with MS3 and MS4's, try posting in the osteo forum (or even rotations forum?) instead. But it's been answered in a number of posts by different ppl a few different times. Check the out some of the pre-threads, such as this one, etc

If I were you I would read the threads dedicated to each school. I know the AZCOM has discussed rotations at length and I have personally added my 2 cents to the discussion (being from AZ).

Check that out and post if you have questions afterwards. 👍

i had to come up with a similar decision and this is what i know, nsu's 3rd and 4th years are spread around throughout florida while azcom's are in arizona (mainly in phx area and tuscon) and ohio(i guess spread throughout).

another thing that i looked at was the match list, azcom had alot of family medicine, almost 1/3 of the class i believe went family medicine. In my opinion, I think NSU's match was better because i want to sepcialize and i believe the opportunities are better at NSU. This may be because NSU is older and people are more familiar with their students allowing them to get in more competitive residencies, but i could be tottaly wrong.

anyways, im surprised this thread is so dead, especially compared to the pcom vs nsu or whatever school is being debated.

First off, congrats to everybody on getting into med school!

I'm a current 4th year at AZCOM. There are a lot of changes taking place at our school, some for the better...and some not so, in my opinion.

When it comes down to it, you're going to want to go to a med school that: 1) teaches you the skills and fund of knowledge to be a good doctor, 2) prepares you to succeed on boards, and 3) will help you land your residency of choice.

In these areas, I think AZCOM has really done well. Overall, AZCOM students do very well on boards; I have classmates that absolutely smoked USMLE and COMLEX. And I think you'd all be very impressed with the Class of 2009 matchlist. Harvard Anesthesia, Dartmouth IM, Univ of Chicago Anesthesia, UC Davis Emergency, Vandy Psych, USC IM, UCSD Family, UNLV Gen Surg, Univ of Colorado IM...the list goes on.

So I'm not going to debate which D.O. school is better for you; only you can answer that. And ultimately, you can succeed no matter where you go if you want it bad enough and work hard enough for it.

Best of luck.

I'm waiting for all the new 2009's to be posted, but in the meantime, I compiled all the previous ones I could find, several months ago. They're in the FAQs, specifically right here:

Nova's has a nice variety. Seems to be a lot of people going into general surgery in that class.

All I keep hearing is how difficult the match was this year, but I've seen 3 DO lists and they are all very, very impressive. Must mean good students.

Hard work pays off. I suspect that all those people that got those super competitive spots in their field would have succeeded anywhere regardless of the school.

nsu's match list was very impressive good job guys

I interviewed at AZCOM. I found it odd how about the only thing they talked about was the comlex pass rate. I liked the area. The school is ridiculously expensive. Nova is a lot less for me, especially since I get some off for being instate.

has anyone made this decision, why? I paid both deposits and have another school in the running, just wanted to see what you guys think

I've heard through the grapevine that there might be 1 doing ortho surg, but again the above list is not complete; there are about 50 additional students who have not yet reported.

We also have 1 ENT match, but was not included in the list as of yet because I haven't heard the specific location.

Based on the information I've gathered in this thread, I conclude that Nova is the greatest of them all.

Of the two I would choose NSU COM. It has a 50-50 primary care/specialty mix which is great. In addition NSU matches well in both the osteopathic and allopathic (NRMP) match. In IM NSU is very strong with students matching at Cleavland Clinic, Emory, Dartmouth, U of Miami, St. Lukes-Roosevelt, Texas and Drexel.

azcom's reported 2009 reported match list is just as strong in my opinion of course
