nova's class schedule

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
it is pretty much 8-5 every day for the first two semesters... but the schedule is a bit awkward this semester

we have some mornings/afternoons blocked off for virtual reality lab, clinical assisting rotations, biomaterials lab, and perio lab, but only about half the class is scheduled for these on a given day. so if you dont have VR, clinic, biomaterials, or perio lab that day, you can sleep in or go home early. Its kind of annoying, but you just have to keep a good calendar.

i should probably mention that class attendance is mandatory too. everyone complains about it, but they expect you to attend 100% of classes. if you miss 2 perio classes (which we only have once per week), you can't get better than a 70 in the class. other classes make sure you attend by giving quizzes at random. The policy has been around forever, but they just started with the quizzes this semester.

Do the random quizzes help you to keep up with the material?

They sort-of help you keep up with the material...

In operative dentistry this term, we have quizzes (usually announced 2-3 days before) on the lecture material for that day. I personally find this very frustrating to be quizzed on something they haven't taught us, since the quizzes aren't exactly easy, and it can be difficult to understand a procedure just by reading about it.

In immunology, the prof gave us 9 or 10 quizzes but will only count your top 4... this allows you to study when you can, and throw out the ones that take place on hectic weeks. Other classes don't do this - a few others give a random pop quiz here or there. I personally like to know when I have something coming up so I can plan for it... I don't usually do so well on the random ones 😛

yes and no... for classes where we know in advance there is going to be a quiz, we generally know what to study and can pass easily. its the unannounced quizzes that I tend to get 0/5's on

i try not to stress about it. quizzes make up at the most 10% of our grade in a class, so to me its not really worth killing myself over... especially during weeks like this = 3 exams + class II prep/amalgam restoration practical 😱
