I recently read that residency credit will not be given to post-soph fellowships. For those who have matched into path or in the process, did you feel that there were a lot of post-soph fellows interviewing at university programs? How do residency directors look at post-soph fellowships? I am very interested in pathology and would ideally like to do my res at NYpresb. (loved the place after spending a summer as a minor lab assistant ). I have mostly high pass and honors 1st year and mostly passes this year. I plan to do some path research next year and electives. I guess my real question is to match at big university programs, how much of a weight is given to post-soph fellowships? I would rather not take a year off school if I can gain the same experience from fourth year away electives. thanks for all your input & good luck with matching.

I'm just currently in the matching process, but my feeling is that a 1 month elective rotation at NY pres would have almost the same weight as a 1 year rotation. I really think there are huge diminishing returns after 1 month. because they can get a good sense of who you are in 1 mo, plus they would know that you had enough interest in their program to do the 1 mo elective, which is part of the reason to do the 1 year thing in the first place right?

a post-soph fellowship just doesn't seem worth it to me, esp now that it doesn't count towards residency. not to mention you'd sorta be on the spot and stressed to make a good impression for a whole year. i think you could get just as many strong letters in 1 mo.

and if you're in a u.s. medschool, score 220's on step 1, do path research, i'm sure you could get interviews and be highly ranked at many university programs.

If you want do do the fellowship I say do it, if you are only looking to increase you chances at a specific place I say just do a rotation or two there.

Everyone shouldn't feel bad they took away the credit for the fellowship. With only 4 years of residency to do basically 2 specialties (AP/CP) they really had to.

You should have no problems finding a great residency position and likely no problem matching at the program you want if you spend time with them.
