Now that they've lost federal funding, what's similar to Americorps health program?

Hi guys,

So for a while I fantasized about doing the Community Healthcorps program. The work I do is pretty "cerebral" (I count my lucky stars not to have to do physically demanding labor, that's not what I'm saying), but for years I've been hungry for more human interaction. I even went so far as to start an application and request letters a couple of years ago. However, with life responsibilities I never took that particular leap.

Now I see that the program has been another casualty of abortion politics 🙁

So my question is, what else is out there? I am hoping to get into medical school, but until that happens (or if it doesn't) it will help me to have a plan that could help me scratch that service itch. I'm particularly interested in working with refugees, homeless, foster care kids, etc. I know a lot of organizations are city/ region specific, but if you know of a great group with a mission along these lines I'd love to read up about them and see if I can find something similar in my area. Thanks for your suggestions!

I'm currently participating in this program (via AmeriCorps) and while it definitely has positives and negatives, I like to think the former are greater and it is great application material. The Philadelphia program in particular works very hands on with refugee populations. There are also some religious organizations, the names of which slip my mind, that have similar missions. Please feel free to PM me for specifics.

I'm currently in an AmeriCorps position in Kansas dealing with primarily underserved and underinsured populations. It's interesting to see the wide variety of things that Health AmeriCorps members do depending on the location of the service. I think it's a great opportunity and I feel that at certain times I really am helping in a substantial way.

It is real good application material and I have talked at length about AmeriCorps in every single interview. 1,700 hours in a primary care setting / community health center will be an awesome experience and I have already learned a lot. I highly recommend the opportunity.

You guys are the best! Thank you so much for your replies (and for many of you, your service). It definitely brightened my day. Best wishes to all.
