Who actually pays attention to those "smoking kills" messages on packs of ciggies? Maybe this will get their attention?

New Australian anti-smoking campaign utilizing what's truly effective.. Pictures of our perio patients! haha

It doesn't stop at perio problems, cancer is a real risk, and a lot of people just don't get that smoking causes oral cancer as well as lung cancer, good campaign 👍

Dentists should have full posters of these things and stick them up in their office.
That would act as the perfect deterent.

Pateint deterent!

That's a really fast way to put off all your patients and lose business.

But it's the thought that counts....

Yeah you need to make sure they don't get confused and think you are doing this to your patients ! 😀

People aren't gonna jump up and say, "Oh my lord, it causes oral cancer in addition to lung cancer. I better quit right now!!" Most smokers in the US know that their habit causes all sorts of cancer, not just lung. I really don't think these types of ads are effective. The most effective anti-smoking campaigns expose Big Tobacco's cynical manipulation of a public it deems gullible.

Small effect at getting them patients to quit smoking. I have one patient (50 pack/year smoking habit), who had a sqamous cell carncinoma of his right lateral border of the tongue/floor of his mouth. Had resection surgery (tongue, partial mandible and modified radical neck dissection to get the lymph nodes 😱 ), and he still smokes 😱 😕

Until that smoker is REALLY ready to quit, all the disgusting (or as we find them interesting 😉 ) pictures in the world won't do a bit of good.

This is true. Anyone who thinks you can "scare" someone into not smoking hasn't worked with many smokers. We have oral/throat cancer patients at the VA Hospital here who aren't phased when they are told that they are going to lose their mandible, tongue, neck, and fibula in the operating room tomorrow. Usually they just say, "OK but I can smoke after the surgery, right?" And then they go outside and smoke through their tracheostomies.

Same over here. Recently, we re-operated a guy who received a MRND with free flap reconstruction a couple years ago. It didn't curb his smoking and drinking. Neither did the second operation--total glossectomy and pharyngolaryngectomy with abdominal free flap reconstruction. The guy still manages to booze down his abdominal "esophagus". It's crazy...

Wow, if someone was already 'one-foot in the grave' with so much surgery, I'd give him a pack of cigarettes! Perhaps it's better to 'pass away' while doing things that you really enjoy... even though it will kill you 'faster'? I don't know, those patients must be in so much pain and drugged up, that they probably wouln't care by now. Just waiting for their turn, I guess.... but we have to do what is right. We're professionals after all. Now, put that cigarette out!!!

Yeah, I think the dentist's role is to keep bringing up the topic to the patient. Then (after maybe 5, 10, 20 years), when the patient tells you they're ready to try quitting, you'll be there to help them. 🙂 You can't force-feed anything to smokers, it just pisses them off, i know.

What's sad is when a dentist is hooked and I feel very bad for my classmates that haven't kicked it yet. After watching my sister struggle with her addiction I know it's a very, very, very tough habit to break and I agree with the other members that stated the problem, for the majority of people with it, is too complex to simply be scared away.

let me know if you really wanna know how hard it is to quit. i have tried it 6 times to be exact. 6 months was the longest time i went without one. i used to believe that its not that hard to quit if you "really" want to. unfortunately, i have proven myself wrong over and over. baaaaad habit that just wont &*%^&%*&^%&^ go away.

i used to stop smoking but whenever i saw my friends and smell cigarette i can't help but smoke, thou i minimize it.. i know it's not easy to quit, it's a step by step process..
