so i'm assuming that NP are calculated as F on the amcas gpa scale, correct?

You really need to read the AMCAS materials provided on the web site yourself. Page 11 of the Applicant Instruction Book answers your question:

"Courses with the AMCAS grades listed below are not included in the GPA calculations. Instead, the total hours for each of these categories are reported to the schools under the heading 'Supplementary Hours':

- Pass/Fail: Pass
- Pass/Fail: Fail
- AP Credit
- CLEP Credit"

If it is a Pass/Fail, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, Pass/No Pass type of course, then the F is not calculated into your GPA. It is however broken down into a line below your GPA showing how many credit hours your passed and how many you failed.
