Hey guys, quick question: I matched into a categorical program last year, I'm in the middle of my intern year. I have had a change of heart and would like to apply to a different specialty this year. What is my obligation to my program according to NRMP? I know the PD won't be happy if I leave, but is it illegal for me to not renew the contract at the end of the year?

No, it's not illegal to not renew your contract. When you match, it's a binding contract that only lasts for ONE year. After that, you can leave, they can fire you, etc.

Your obligation from NRMP is to show up and start your residency; the NRMP contract does not obligate you to finish the year or sign a contract for next year.
