For the current NSU students,
what is the dress code and attendance policy like in your opinion? also, what is the class schedule like during your first year? does having to dress in a certain manner ever get annoying while sitting in class? thanks

sorry, one more thing: what is the COMLEX pass rate on average?

Since you can wear scrubs, the dress code has never been a problem for me. I actually like wearing scrubs - they are easy and comfortable.
The attendance policy is annoying; you have to scan your id card before every hour of lecture. We just started it so I'm not sure how it will go, but you can miss 30% of any class before you are "in trouble". I generally go to class and just sit in the back and study if it is a lecture I don't care for, so I don't think the policy will be a problem for me, but who knows. I suppose this really varies from person to person depending on how often you generally attend classes.

I didn't think the fall semester schedule was that bad. I think we only stayed to 5 on some Wednesdays and generally got out pretty early on Monday and by noon every other Friday. Finals were hell, but hopefully they will be more spread out next year. It feels like we are always in class this semester. I am doing the MPH program also though so maybe I'm not the best person to ask. Below is our schedule and a link to other info. I can't remember the complex pass rates; hopefully, someone else will. Although I am currently not a student there, I plan on attending next Fall unless accepted to one of my higher ranked choices. I did like the campus and opportunity to do the MPH program. Plus I'll hopefully go to the University of Miami to take a class or two in other topics I'm interested in. I completely disagree with the attendance policy and dress code. As soon as I matriculate I shall be petitioning to have the dress code loosed so that it isn't necessary to wear a tie. I don't mind wearing slacks and a nice shirt, but a tie. I'm also not sure if they will simply let you were sweaters, but I shall try and have that implemented if not already in place. In addition, I am going to see what I can do the help the policy makers understand that not everyone learns in the same fashion. For some it is easier to imbibe the knowledge on their own, while for others they must have someone dictate it to them. The attendance policy is good for hands on classes like OMM or anatomy, but certainly not biochemistry. Why waste my time sitting in biochemistry when I don't really need to study the subject. I feel my time would better be served brushing up on other topics. I guess you can always just have a friend swipe our card for you.

As far as the dress code goes, people have been getting away with a lot... Most people wear scrub pants and a t-shirt/tank top/sweatshirt... Most people wear flip-flops or sandals.... A lot of guys will just wear a dress shirt or polo shirt... There are some days that people have shown up in jeans... A teacher said something to me once for wearing sandals in anatomy lab (which, yeah, i guess that's pretty gross), but I think that as long as you are in dress code for tests, it's okay. Although they are cracking down on attendence, I can't see them doing the same for the dress code.

(Plus, if you have a friend swipe your card for you and you get caught, they have threatened to kick you out of school for that... I don't recommend that option...) 😀

I doubt they will actually remove an individual from the school for skirting the attendance policy. At most I assume they place a little note in your file saying you were sent to the principle's office. I highly doubt residency directors actually care about how many days you attended class if you were in the top 5% and had extensive EC's and research, as I plan on doing.

I am glad to hear that the dress code isn't enforced that rigorously.

Having graduated from NSUCOM in 2003, I can say that our dress code was very lax. Don't let that affect where you decide to go, its not that big a deal. Your choices for medical school should depend on: A) Tuition and B) Location. NSUCOM was a great school, made great friends adn had a blast. Don't hesitate to go there.

I just wanted to ask you about the city life in ft lauderdale (sp?). All I know about Florida is from what I see from movies (ex. Birdcage). I know this may sound a little ignorant, but is the city the same as portrayed by the media? ex. lots of people in shorts riding in bikes, beach lifestyle, life revolving around the ocean, etc...

The birdcage took place on Miami beach, not Ft. Lauderdale. Ft.Lauderdale is actually a damn nice place, a lot of people who visit down here overlook it. Whereas, South beach and Miami has most of the clubs, some of the best in the world mind you, Ft. Lauderdale is a pretty big bar scene. There are a few clubs in Ft. Lauderdale, but It sort of reminds me of a very large college bar scene. There is everything from Live Blues and Jazz at O'Hara's to Beach place, an outdoor 3 story mall with Fat Tuesdays, Howl at the Moon, and Hooters. In Ft. Lauderdale there are 3 main drags of bars/clubs/restaurants. First you have the beach, which is along A1A right on the famouns Ft. Lauderdale beach, the birthplace of spring break as we know it. There are bars, clubs, and beachplace right there in one strip. Next you have Riverfront, which reminds me of a college bar scene with tons of younger people and a lot of bars with "character". Finally you have Las Olas Blvd. which effectively connects the other two. Las olas has a few bars, but no real clubs. It has some amazing restaurants, and several art galleries/shops/ etc. Do some research, i bet you'll be impressed.

Actually, if you swipe another person's card, or sign a sign-in sheet for them, it is considered fraud, and the school has zero tolerance for that. You won't get kicked out for LACK of attandance until you start missing over 50% of lots of classes, but swiping someone elses card, or having someone swipe YOUR card, is completely different. Like I said, they consider it FRAUD and reason for dismissal.

Or at least that is what they tell us, and personally, I'm not going to be the one to test that rule.

And the attendance policy is really no big deal. It will only affect the select few who don't come on a regular basis. And I can tell you now, that unless the administration is completely overhauled in the next 6 months, there will be nothing anyone can do about having to be in class. If you choose to pick that battle, you will lose. They have already heard all the arguments, read the articles, etc, etc, and they aren't budging. However, the card reading itself might not work. If that happens, I'm assuming we will go to paper sign in sheets every hour or something like that.

I'm sorry if I'm sounding, um, sharp, in my reply, but you have to trust me when I say that if you come in to any school with the attitude that you will change some major policies, you will be sorely disappointed. I hope you can take the next few months to realize that the dress code is really no big deal, very lax, and they won't change the actual code, and that the attendance policy is no big deal either.

NSUCOM is a great school, and I love it here. Please don't make your decision based on clothing and attendance. And come here with an open mind.

Thanks for the info! I'm interviewing on Friday at NSU-COM (many thanks to the Powers That Be for getting me out of the Ohio snow!!!). As it is, I'm staying two nights because my flight back was cheaper on Saturday. Any suggestions on what I should check out in Ft. Lauderdale in the evening after my interview??? Pegasus...I reccommend that you try hitting South Beach...an experience in itself. But if you are strapped for cash, as we all are, I say try dowtown Lauderdale. There are places called Las Olas, Beach Place, and Riverfront. Very cool areas to go chill.


watch for the price of boos...tend to be pricey down here...example...I went to a club in South Beach and ordered two beers...the bartender comes back and says "12 bucks" and I responded "No no no...you don't understand...I ordered 2 beers...not 3 or 4"....her response...."I know....12 bucks!!"
