I just interviewed at NSU and was accepted today. I have two other interviews and am considering cancelling them. I just hope that I am not being nieve in my thinking that the attendance policy isn't all bad. I liked absolutely everything else about the school. I mean, I hear that you are just required to attend 70% of the class. Seems tolerable considering this IS medical school. Don't misinterpret - I understand those who can study and learn either better or just as well on their own, but I am a go to class kind of person anyway. However, it would be nice not to stress out about missing class when necessary. Any thoughts about attending other interviews?(Pikeville and Western)

your call. My philosophy was that you only get one chance to interview for medical schools and you should go for it. If anything to compare and contrast the schools. Now if you know you absolutly want to go somewhere then by all means cancel your others. Once I was accepted to a few schools I turned down interviews at Pikeville, TUCOM, and DMU. I really wanted to interview at some of these schools but money started to be an issue. It cost a lot of money for me to fly to Iowa and Califorina while I didn't see anything really shifting my priorities there.

Robz,
Thanks for the input. Money to travel to a couple of schools probably isn't a huge obstacle right now, but certainly a consideration. I hear Pikeville is in a really small town (approx. 6, 500 ppl). I think it may take an outstanding opportunity there to persuade me. But, I guess you never know if you don't look.

No prob,

Pikeville is set up to serve the rural KY area and they are in a rural area. COMP is in the LA area and there have been many many threads about that school on here and the Osteopathic board as well.

I hated turning down interviews, especially when I applied I would have been happy to get one. After a while I had to get my priorities in order and realize I still need to make deposit payments.

Good luck!

Is NSU-COM the only school you interviewed at? If so I would definitely go to some other interviews. This way it gives you something to compare and contrast. As of right now I shall be attending NSU next year, but am disheartened at their attendance and dress code policies. Even after attending so many interviews, I am still not sure I made the right choice. I hope there is something at one of the schools that enables you to just say WOW this is exactly what I am looking for. Therefore, I would recommend attending at least one of the two upcoming interviews. Which school are you closer too, Pikesville or Western? Are you interested in rural medicine, specialty etc..? Also take these factors into consideration when making the decision. I personally wouldn't want to attend school in the LA area due to crime, traffic, pollution etc... However southern Cali does have its positive points too.

Herp,
Yes, so far, I have only interviewed at NSU. However, I did look at DMU, UHS, and used to live in southern California (over 20 years) I really don't want to go back there for many of the same reasons you expressed.

I currently live in the upper midwest, so I'm really not close to either school. AND, it is quite the process to get to Pikeville. You have a minimum of a 1.5 hour drive depending on where you fly in. In some cases, the travel and layovers make this a 8-9 hour trip.

I am considering specializing in rads, but haven't made any firm decision on that as of yet. Do you know if either school would benefit me in this regard?

Plus you'll never know who'll you meet at an interview....

Right herp?

(I met Herp at AZCOM in October)

😀

This is true. I met the trouble maker (j/k) Robz at AZCOM. It is great to meet and converse with individuals going through the same process. They can give you advice from their experiences and hopefully help you make better decisions on schools. As of now I shall be attending NSU with Robz and boy are gonna have a good time. It's much easier to begin school knowing a few people beforehand.

As for the specialty issue, I don't believe Pikesville will be of any use as they are interested in serving the undeserved areas of their state. NSU seems to be more open to the idea of specialties. In addition, you can attain a Master in Public Health at NSU with no additional time added on and for free. The one thing I really liked about NSU was the opportunity to do research for a year between MSII and MSIII. If you qualify you will most likely get a publication or two and have the last two years of school paid for, which is definitely a plus. I can't speak for Western because I don't know that much about their program. I believe they opened a Veterinary school though, not that that helps. Besides, it doesn't sound like you want to go back there.

Herp,
Well in the bright side, I've already started to get to know you two. I agree, it helps when you already know a few ppl.

I knew about the MPH degree and it is a great program. I'm not sure I would want any added work to what we are going to have already. But FREE is GOOD.

I liked the OMM fellowship and the fact that you get your third and fourth year tuition waved if accepted. However, I don't know that I would want to get away from the rest of my class - unless there were 8-10 (the number they are talking about accepting this year) good classmates to fall back with.

I haven't heard many real positive things about WUHS. I hear they have 98% of their tests every Monday.

OOOUCH!

Herp, what is your feeling on the attendance deal?

I have expressed this to Robz before and on one of the other forums. I completely disagree with the attendance policy and dress code. As soon as I matriculate I shall be petitioning to have the dress code loosed so that it isn't necessary to wear a tie. I don't mind wearing slacks and a nice shirt, but a tie. I'm also not sure if they will simply let you were sweaters, but I shall try and have that implemented if not already in place. In addition, I am going to see what I can do the help the policy makers understand that not everyone learns in the same fashion. For some it is easier to imbibe the knowledge on their own, while for others they must have someone dictate it to them. The attendance policy is good for hands on classes like OMM or anatomy, but certainly not biochemistry. Why waste my time sitting in biochemistry when I don't really need to study the subject. I feel my time would better be served brushing up on other topics. I guess you can always just have a friend swipe our card for you.

That tie comment made me think of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air when Will wore his tie around his forehead....

"It says wear a tie...but it didn't says where!" 🙂

Fresh Prince, Ha! That one was funny! I'll wear my white coat inside out too, and sew in a paisley silk liner:laugh:

I've heard that having a friend swipe your card carries SERIOUS penalties. Wouldn't recommend it.

I will be in every class, but I can totally understand the people that don't need to be.

I feel bad for those of you who are not quite sure of your decision. NSU fits me in so many ways, I feel quite lucky to have found it.

I have interviewed at a total of 4 schools, and all of them except NSU have been in driving distance. If you can afford to, I would highly recommend going to your other interviews. I now KNOW without a doubt that even my 2nd choice is nowhere near as good a fit for me.

Radman, how did you find out about your acceptance? I'm totally paranoid that Mary was looking at the wrong name or something. I can't wait until I get that acceptance letter!

Yep, I'm in man!!!

Can't wait to actually get my acceptance letter though.

NotShorty,
Congrats on your acceptance to NSU !!! 🙂

a sweater in Fort Lauderdale????

just wear scrubs every day:clap:

of course I decided not to attend NSU and have hated that decision every morning that I look out on the tundra that CT has turned into+pity+

to the OP, at least check out one more school so you don't have to worry in the future why you didn't at least check another place out (you may not be like this but I would always wonder).

good luck

Unless the policy has changed within the past 2 years, the dress code at NSU allowed you to wear scrubs to class. I think pretty much everyone did this.

PTjay,
Yea, I think that's what I have decided to do. Probably visit Western in Cali. I have family out there, so at least I can kinda keep the cost down. Thanks for the opinion.

I gotta BOX of scrubs with my name on it.............

For those who are worried about dress code...it's no big deal...trust me.. 🙂

As for attendance policy, we are working on that one too....

Radman,

I know you read my posts about attendance on the NSU website, so I won't reiterate here. The dresscode----very lenient. I wear scrubs almost every day. Days when I have to go to the Doctor's office, I wear dress pants and a shirt. I'm a girl, so don't need to worry about a tie or anything. Girls aren't supposed to wear open-toed shoes at doctor's offices, but they are worn all the time at school. I don't ever wear them anyway......i don't like my feet.

Go to your other interviews though if you can. Another school might just blow you away. The OPP fellowship usually takes about 5 or 6 students, so you will be stuck back one year together. But you will get your first choice of rotation sites for you 3rd and 4th years. It can be competitive getting the fellowship if there are a lot of students who apply.

There are lots of great things about NSU. Let us know how your other interviews go, and if you decide on NSU.

Good luck
