Not sure what you're looking for in a reply. If you think there are secret motivation techniques out there that only gurus of motivation know, then you're in for disappointment

I feel like I don't really "fit the bill" for med school in that I'm not really a hypermotivated type A personality like it feels like most of my classmates are. If I enjoy something, I work hard and do my best to do well, but I don't really get a lot of satisfaction out of achievement for the sake of achievement, if that makes any sense.

I am a lot like you. I have never been the type A personality. I went to college right out of high school finished a degree then didn't use it. I joined the fire service instead. I started toying around with idea of med school and started working on my pre-reqs while working. Never took my pre-reqs more serious than my job (i.e. I kept working my standard 24/48 while taking all my pre-med classes). I took the MCAT, did mediocre, applied and told myself I'll give it one shot, if I don't get in, eh. Well I did. I've done ok, not anywhere near top 10%, but I'm fairly certain I'm somewhere in the top half. And that's good enough for me.

Though to answer your question I still work. Not 24/48's anymore, but all through first year it wasn't uncommon for me to do a 12 during the week and a 36 on the weekend. This year I've been keeping it mainly to 24's on the weekend since Step 1 is fast approaching. It's a great way for me to blow off steam (nothing like busting through the door on a fully involved structure to relieve some stress ), and hanging out at the "house" with the guys just generally keeps me sane.

I looked for AGES for a volunteer squad around here I could join -- it's probably the thing I miss the most being in med school. I'm just a basic (not fire trained), but I miss EMS something fierce. Ironic that the biggest thing I miss being in med school is patient interaction, eh?
