Was browsing the aamc careers in medicine site and came upon the attached image. It seems that the number of pathologists per 100000 has decreased since 2001. Compare this to dermatology, where numbers have risen from 3.4 to 3.8

Maybe the leadership is correct about the impending shortage.

Shhhhhhh... we don't need pathology to become the old radiology, okay?

great news. Now please burn this thread.

Technology has advanced a hell of a lot in the past 15 years, as have the standards of care.

Algorithmic slide scanners take care of thousands of pap smears a day, and the number of slides taken per case have been tightened. I'm not surprised the per capita number of pathologists have fallen; I suspect they will continue to do so, without much negative impact on the nation's health.

If they were smart, they moved on to another career.

This may be like the nation's unemployment rate. A number of pathologist may have just given up on finding work again.

They are now cleaning toilets in office buildings.

"Peak Pathology" has passed. Efficiency is only increasing. Reimbursements are drastically decreasing. Regulations increasing. Headaches increasing.

Flee Pathology Now!!

Oh no - look at how successful those evil (and soooooo smart) dermatologists have been at keeping their numbers down!!!!

Despite the increase, dermatologists are still in demand. Compare that with pathologists.
